This is a busy and expanding department is based within the main outpatients building of the hospital and has been fully renovated as of September 2021. The Ophthalmic Optometry and Orthoptic departments deal with over 50,000 outpatient visits per year. A total in excess of 3,000 day case operations are currently performed annually.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate actively in the diagnosis, management and follow-up with retinal disease both under supervision and on his/her own. This is a full time clinical fellowship post for a fixed term period of 12 months with possibility to extend.

This post is designed to support this service and to ensure that patient waiting times are maintained within target.

The post-holder will be expected to take part in teaching, research and audit and will also need to keep abreast with the constant change that the Ophthalmology department requires to ensure that it runs efficiently.

It will give the opportunity of extensive clinical exposure to the diagnosis and management of Retinal conditions. The post may allow the post holder to develop essential competences to progress towards Article 14. We are committed to provide experience in specialist clinics and surgery according to a personal development plan. These include Medical and Surgical Retina, Uveitis, Diabetic Eye disease, Age Related Macular Degeneration.

We are building a new elective orthopaedic centre for ESNEFT at Colchester Hospital. It will be one of the biggest centres in the country and will ensure we can retain complex and low volume cases locally for the people we serve.

We are also now building a £7million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit at Colchester.

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.

The post-holder will be expected to work with Colleagues and the Divisional Clinical Director to ensure the service is delivered in line with best practice. He/she will be based at the Primary Care Centre but will be expected to work flexibly
