**About Us**

The SIA is the organisation responsible for the regulation of private security. It is an independent, arm’s length body (ALB) of the Home Office, reporting to the Home Secretary, under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001. The SIA’s purpose protecting the public through effective regulation of the private security industry and working with partners to raise standards across the sector. Its regulatory remit covers the whole of the United Kingdom.

The SIA has two main duties: the compulsory licensing of individuals undertaking designated activities within the private security industry and the management of a voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme, which measures private security suppliers against independently assessed criteria.

SIA licensing covers security operatives who are in guarding, door supervision, close protection, cash and valuables in transit, and public space surveillance using CCTV, vehicle immobilisation (in Northern Ireland) and key holding. Licensing ensures that private security operatives are fit and proper persons who are properly trained and qualified to do their job.

Our core purpose is protecting the public through effective regulation of the private security industry and working with partners to rise standards across the sector.

**Job description**:
**Role**

You will personally lead a range of high-profile, crosscutting policy projects, and oversee projects that are being undertaken by members of SIA.

This will include leading the development and maintenance of policies and guidance concerning the private security industry as well as leading, coordinating and overseeing cross-remit policy projects. You will be expected to work flexibly across the team’s policy areas as needed and in response to priorities. You will work to SIA’s General Counsel and will have line management responsibility for a team of Senior Policy Advisors.

This is a key post in SIA that will require you to be able to bring experience of policy or legislative work and start delivering at pace.

**Responsibilities**

You will:

- Anticipate and monitor security sector-related policy initiatives in the UK and advise on the implications of those initiatives for the SIA.
- Delivering policy workstreams within agreed timescales.
- Provide policy advice and support to projects and working groups across the SIA, where appropriate.
- Leading on the development of policy matters within the remit of the Team. This includes public consultations, impact assessments (including equality impact assessments) and proposed amendments to legislation.
- Advising other SIA teams on policy, political and regulatory issues within those teams’ remits.
- Providing advice on how the SIA can meet its regulatory obligations (both legal and good practice). This includes providing advice to colleagues on how they can conduct Regulatory Impact Assessments, Equality Impact Assessments, and Business Impact Target (BIT) assessments.
- Ensuring that the SIA submits and publishes its BIT documents as required and by the deadlines.
- Ensuring the SIA is properly informed by, and shapes, its political and regulatory environments through external representation and horizon scanning. This includes being the key contact for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), and representing the SIA at events for regulators run by BEIS and other public bodies.
- Contribute to dealing with enquiries and requests for advice and information on policy from within the SIA, Home Office and third parties. This includes drafting correspondence for the Chief Executive when required.
- Leading the SIA responses to Parliamentary Questions (PQ), including being the single point of contact on PQs for the Home Office, and working with colleagues to draft and clear appropriate contributions to PQ answers.
- Brief the Senior Leadership Team and the Board on policy matters, producing position papers and suggesting pragmatic workable solutions to issues arising.
- Facilitate delivery of the SIA’s strategic and policy priorities and support approval of business initiatives.
- Develop the policy expertise of the team.
- Complete reasonable ad-hoc duties and tasks requested by your manager.
