- Job description- There is an exciting opportunity to join our Fisheries, Biodiversity & Geomorphology team in the Bridgwater office of Wessex Area. This is a key team, working hard to create a better place by protecting and enhancing our diverse habitats and wildlife.
As a Biodiversity Technical Officer in the team, you would provide high quality, evidence-based ecological advice to internal colleagues and external customers.
Principal accountabilities:

- Screen and advise on all relevant Environment Agency programmes, plans and projects for biodiversity impacts to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
- Identify and influence opportunities to deliver multiple benefits and to work with natural processes, through river basin management and flood risk management planning and delivery.
- Be proactive in integrating biodiversity enhancements into Environment Agency capital schemes, including Biodiversity Net Gain
- Take an active role in biodiversity & biosecurity incident response, and support wider environmental incident response.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- The team covers Somerset, Avon and north Wiltshire which contains a fascinating range of nationally and internationally important wildlife sites including the unique landscape of the Somerset Levels and Moors.
We work in partnership to advise both internal and external customers on the mitigation of environmental impacts and delivery biodiversity net gain.

- Experience/skills required- You will be an ecologist, or naturalist, qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and be:

- A confident communicator
- Enthusiastic with excellent influencing and negotiating skills
- Able to interpret complex technical issues into pragmatic, clear and compelling advice
- Experienced in managing conflicting demands, and effective prioritisation

You will be able to demonstrate your ecological expertise and experience of delivering conservation work through:

- A good understanding of wetland habitat management and the ecological requirements of aquatic and wetland habitats and species
- Surveying for protected species
- Knowledge and experience of conservation principles, legislation and the regulatory process
- Contributions to the scoping and/or reviewing of Strategic Environmental Assessments, Appropriate Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments and Water Framework Directive assessments
- A sound understanding of the principles of Biodiversity Net Gain
- Membership of a relevant professional institute
- Knowledge of fisheries and geomorphology would be an advantage

This role is office based but involves travel across the area and work in the field. A full UK driving licence is essential.
