Autoclave and Microbiology Stores Attendant

An opportunity has arisen within the Black Country Pathology Services microbiology team to support the provision of an effective and efficient stock management storage at New Cross Hospital.
The post holder isexpected to complete stock checks for all products in Microbiology on a weekly/monthly basis and submit this information via the computer to the Store’s Manager; put away deliveries and maintain an organized and tidy store room.
In addition, the post holder will after training they will be required to sterilize, bag and dispose of laboratory waste; an essential element of the functioning of the Microbiology laboratory.
The post holder will be responsible for receiving deliveries into the microbiology department, transporting products to appropriate storage facilities, maintaining stock records and general standard of storage areas.
The post holder will work closely with the microbiology senior management team and the BCPS main stores team.

- To follow all standard operating procedures related to this work
- Loading and unloading the autoclaves with clinical waste
- Bagging of the clinical waste following autoclaving into the appropriate bags and the correct labelling of the bag.
- Safe disposal of laboratory waste to the outside compound, once autoclaved and bagged; in accordance with the Trust’s waste management policy.
- Dispose of full discard jars/biobins in the different areas of the lab, and replace.
- To assist in the rotation and movement of laboratory waste.
- To wash up re-useable laboratory glassware and items of equipment as directed by the BMS section managers.
- Assist in the management of locally held stocks in accordance with the set stock levels reflecting the suppliers lead times and departmental demand.
- To assist with the putting away of all deliveries and employing stock rotation to minimize stock losses.
- Checking delivery paperwork to ensure that all products have been received and informing the Stores manager and one of the Microbiology management team of any issues.
- To maintain an organised tidy store room.
- Provides basic clinical technical services to include the culturing of Vitek purity plates following testing and also the dispensing of 3ml saline aseptically for the Vitek tubes with subsequent testing and signing off of sterility.
- Other duties as directed by the BMS section managers.

Administrative
- Understanding and compliance with Standard Operating Procedures for the laboratory areas.
- Participate in audit/surveys of the laboratory area as they arise.
General
- To observe and adhere to local and national Health and Safety policies.

- To maintain good work relations with all members of staff, and to promote effective Team work.
- To treat everyone associated with the trust with courtesy and respect.
- To ensure compliance with all local and national standards of work practice e.g. UKAS
- To maintain and promote the professional image of the department.
- The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in line with the grading of the post.
