**Responsible for**: No direct reports

**Salary**: £10.90 per hour

**About We The Curious**

We The Curious is an educational charity and South West England's leading science centre.

We produce experiences that bring people together to play, get creative with science and explore different ideas.

We work with partners, locally and nationally, supporting people to be inquisitive, develop new skills and improve their wellbeing.

We are progressive, inquisitive, collaborative, playful and creative.

**Our mission**

Our aim is to connect and empower people through sharing creative experiences which celebrate unknowns in science.

Our work as a charity is driven by five key pledges:

- Cultivate Curiosity
- Include Everyone
- Open Up Science
- Sustainable Futures
- Build Resilience
You can find out more about these in our Manifesto.

**About the role**

Whilst our venue remains closed, We The Curious’ ‘Out and About’ programme will be popping up across Bristol this summer. Activity Assistants support the delivery of this events programme by providing creative, playful and inclusive experiences for our audiences.

Out and About events are attended by lots of different people and age groups, but our main audience for the summer programme is families, so you should be confident working with children (aged 3-11 years), young people and their adults. You will be expected to start conversations and show people how to get involved, sparking curiosity, creating fun and valuing people’s opinions and life experiences.

Much of our summer programme will take place outside, so you must enjoy working outdoors. This role also includes regular manual handling; you will be expected to help pack our van, travel with the team to events offsite, carry equipment and set up event materials, facilitate hands-on activities and then pack everything down safely for transport back to We The Curious.

Our Activity Assistants will be given full training on activity content, facilitation techniques and health and safety/safeguarding protocol before starting in role. This will involve learning and retaining key skills and information, including some simple science concepts, to ensure you can deliver our activities successfully.

**What will you do in this role?**

**Role specific responsibilities**
- You will facilitate curious and joyful experiences with our audiences; in both our outside spaces at We The Curious (on Millennium and Anchor Square), and at community venues and outdoor locations around Bristol.
- You will provide a high standard of welcome to all our audiences
- You will model behaviour and support participants to engage with activities - which can include giving demonstrations, providing explanations and facilitating hands-on creative activities in both a drop-in and timed format.
- You will be present in the activity space, encouraging conversations and sparking curiosity in participants throughout the event.
- You will adapt to the needs of the diverse range of individuals who participate in our activities.
- You will have full knowledge of risk assessment, health and safety, and safeguarding procedures (following training provided by We The Curious) and will put them into practice at all events, ensuring the well being of everyone involved
- You will listen to audience feedback, remain calm and resolving issues where you are able, working with your colleagues if needed.
- This role requires you to work a flexible shift pattern (Wednesdays through Sundays), including a minimum of one weekend day per week.

**What we're looking for from you**

**Essential Skills include**
- You are confident working with the public
- You will have excellent communication skills, able to engage both individuals and groups of people
- You will have excellent listening skills and can understand audience need and expectations
- You can find starting points for conversations on a wide variety of topics and adapt to people of different backgrounds, age, ability and interest
- You are confident learning and retaining information; including some simple science concepts at a non-specialist/entry level
- You are comfortable working in new environments and adapting to quickly changing circumstances
- You have a positive attitude to solving problems and handling customer service issues.
- You are comfortable working outside and carrying out basic manual handling tasks - if the manual handling is a barrier for you, we are happy to discuss access requirements.
