At least one in six people in England are at risk from flooding from rivers and the sea, with many more at risk from surface water flooding. Due to the changing climate this risk is increasing. The Environment Agency plans to invest £5.2bn over 6 years to combat flood risk.
- As an FCRM Planning and Permitting Advisor in the Partnerships and Strategic Overview (PSO) Team, you will be a leader within our Statutory Team ensuring future developments are resilient to the threat of flooding and climate change. You will work across the planning, permitting and Data and Evidence functions, where along with colleagues and partners your contribution will help to reduce flood risk to people and property across the East Midlands.
- This team's role is extremely varied and requires a diverse range of transferrable skills.
- Drawing on previous experience you will be able to:
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to the team by drawing on your experience in Flood Risk Management and working knowledge of Environmental Permitting and Planning legislation.
- Forge constructive relationships and create partnerships with communities, Risk Management Authorities, businesses, and internal teams to reduce flood risk while realising environmental benefits.
- Support our response to environmental and flood incidents.

The team
- Our PSO Teams are central to reducing flood risk locally. We do this by:
- Providing strategic direction (having an overview of flood risk from all sources)
- Developing and delivering projects to reduce flood risk to communities while enhancing the environment
- Regulating works and development through Planning and Environmental Permitting
- Building, improving and utilising data and evidence on flood risk.

Experience/skills required
- Through your experience you will be able to demonstrate the following:
- Have a geographical / science / engineering background, relevant degree / professional qualification.
- Be an intelligent problem solver, with an ability to make sound decisions and risk-based judgements to maintain a proportionate approach to work, balancing detail with the overall picture.
- Skilled at managing multiple priorities and competing demands.
- An enthusiasm to work as part of a team providing technical leadership and delegating, mentoring and supporting tasks as required to ensure resilience across the team.
- A proven ability to communicate, and develop and maintain good relationships, with a variety of customers.
- An understanding of flood risk management in the Environment Agency or elsewhere would be advantageous.
