This is an exciting opportunity for you to join the Department’s Payroll Operations team, which sits within the HR Services team based in Leeds. The overall function of the team is to provide accurate and efficient operational payroll services to the Department of Health and Social Care working closely with our third-party payroll provider.

The Payroll and Pensions Officer will be a key part of the Payroll Operations team, responsible for delivering a range of employee services across the Department of Health and Social Care.

This role will report directly to the Deputy Payroll Manager and will primarily be responsible for the administration associated with ensuring that the DHSC monthly payroll operates efficiently and accurately.

You will respond to any payroll issues in a timely manner, considering the options available and the impact of each option.

You will communicate explanations of payroll-related issues clearly and effectively to all customers.

You will liaise with external stakeholders on behalf of customers to ensure appropriate payroll activity can be completed, including other Government departments, HMRC, MyCSP (Civil Service pensions administrator)

**Job description**:
The key responsibilities include:

- Monthly payroll processing, such as annual leave, overpayments, overtime claims, corrections, advance payments.
- Send new starter checklist/P45s, court orders etc. to our third-party payroll provider.
- Checking and validating pension records.
- Processing all corrections / adjustments from prior month.
- Monthly payroll validation checking, such as variance checks, validating absence warnings and peer to peer checking.
- Responding to all queries in a timely manner.

**Essential criteria**:

- Experience of providing a high level of customer service with a view to having an eye for detail and the ability to work through ambiguity.
- Be able to investigate possible solutions where the answer is not clear, showing perseverance and resilience when faced with obstacles.
- Communicate clearly and concisely in writing, taking into account the knowledge of the audience.
- Understand the customers’ needs and expectations when working with them, conveying difficult messages sensitively but confidently.
- Be a proven team player with the ability to develop a range of effective relationships within and outside of own team who fosters a collaborative approach to working.

**Desirable criteria**:

- Previous payroll experience is desirable but not essential.
