We are looking for the right person to take on the running of our well established, popular and profitable gardening business in West Cornwall. This person would ideally be someone with a strong interest in gardening, with practical experience and a desire to work for yourself. Due to our forthcoming plans to emigrate to Ireland this autumn, we would like to offer the right person the opportunity to purchase our successful business, paying the purchase price of £22,000 on a monthly basis over the first one to three years of ownership. Our business offers the new owner a well-known and trusted name, with a full diary of regular customers that provide a reliable and stable income throughout every season of the year. Established in May 2021, this fast-growing enterprise gave us the means to swap our corporate jobs for the freedom of working for ourselves, and has provided our full income since its inception. Enjoying full positive customer reviews; reliable repeat custom; and a business model that can be readily modified or expanded, this represents a fantastic opportunity and can be easily modified to suit any lifestyle or ambition.

The business provides a whole range of traditional gardening services to regular customers, alongside occasional one-off clearance, landscaping and design work. We have positioned the business in an underserved niche by specialising in providing ‘beds and borders’ gardening, in which we take care of whole gardens rather than just the lawn and hedge care provided by many competitors. This has meant the business is in high demand, with the diary being automatically filled with regular all-year customers. Other than a popular and engaged Facebook group plus sign-written vehicle, we have had no need to advertise; instead gaining new customers through reputation and word-of-mouth recommendations. Indeed, the business receives more enquiries than we can currently accommodate, providing added security and an excellent opportunity for expansion.

We currently run the business as a husband-and-wife team, with approximately two-thirds of bookings being one-person work and the remainder two-person work. It has a strong and loyal customer base of regular customers, the majority of which are visited on a fortnightly or monthly basis throughout the year. Additional revenue is earnt through sales of plants and garden accessories to existing customers alongside one-off work as suits our schedule and earning potential. The current business model is based on two 3.5 hour bookings per day throughout the majority of the year, with occasional three 3.5 hour bookings per day during the longer summer days. We have optimised the business model over time and have found it to be resilient and flexible.

In our first year of operation, the business turned over £40,152, with a net profit of £14,129 (after accounting for one-off set-up costs including vehicle purchase and gardening equipment). Excluding one-off costs setup costs, the net profit for the first year would have been £27,073. The second year of operation turned over £48,107, with a net profit of £32,127. Now in our third year of operation, our net profits are forecast to exceed that of the first two years.

The business’ popularity and reputation also provides scope to increase profits further, depending on the new owners’ interests. There is significant headroom for increasing prices whilst still remaining competitive, expanding the current business model with additional staff, taking on more fixed price work, or increasing the proportion of design and landscaping work.

The sale is to include the business trading name, with all associated rights, website domains and social media accounts, and an established, year-round and profitable customer base. We would love to see the business to continue to grow and be successful, and are happy to provide a detailed handover of each regular customer to ensure a smooth transition and enduring loyalty.

This represents a reluctant and genuine opportunity that is only necessary because we intend to emigrate to Ireland this autumn.
