An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Risk & Controls Lead to join our team on a full time, permanent basis

This role will be supporting National Grid’s Electricity Distribution (NGED) business in achieving its strategic objectives by providing high quality risk and controls services.

You will lead and advise on risk management activities and provide control advisory services, primarily at NGED’s principal risk level. You will also conduct key controls testing and deliver risk-based 2nd line assurance activities.

**What You'll Do**:

- Support and enable NGED’s risk management maturity, helping to embed the National Grid risk management framework.
- Lead in scheduling meetings with first line risk and control owners, participating in walkthroughs with stakeholders and documenting the end-to-end process in narrative format.
- Support our leaders and team members with second line controls testing, documenting results in line with the standard guidance provided by the Group Chief Risk Office (CRO).
- Plan and deliver a robust, risk-based assurance plan, and ensure that findings, lessons learned, and best practice is fed back into the operational teams and procedural governance.
- Plan and coordinate cross business delivery of NGED’s external quality management certifications (ISO9001:2015), where applicable.
- Assist first line colleagues in completing the Control Self-Assessment Process and guide them on how to update the internal GRC Archer system.
- Support Manager(s) and other team members in updating slides used for meeting materials and dashboards tracking status of controls testing.
- Complete other Assurance or administrative tasks at the direction of the Manager(s)
- Attend all training for the Archer system and PowerBI dashboards to ensure first and second line is supported in completing tasks within these tools.
- Create Standard Operating Procedures to support the risk function.
- Administer and support reporting mechanisms, KPIs, and resulting scorecards for effective risk performance management e.g., aggregation of local, functional and regional performance.
- Execute risk-based controls testing, documentation and reporting in line with good practice guidance.
- Prepare and present comprehensive, clear, concise reports, maintaining objectivity and impartiality.
- Manage follow-up and progress of remediation of assurance findings to ensure timely remediation by the business.
- Effectively communicate with leaders across NGED to avoid surprises, highlight issues and ensure timely delivery.
- Proactively look for areas of improvement and provide value adding and insightful recommendations on process and control improvements.
- Support the business to identify risk gaps and control deficiencies and put in place mitigation strategies.
- Support and coach 1st line risk owners and risk champions building an understanding of risk and controls.
- Support translation and interpretation of the National Grid Risk Appetite.
- Assimilate and validate all necessary information from across the business to create holistic risk reporting on behalf of the business.

**What You'll Have**:

- Ability to provide expert risk and controls support and advice to all levels of the business.
- Good communication skills.
- Experience of business processes such as internal or external audit, SOX, risk management, or other similar business functions.
- Understanding of risk identification and assessment techniques, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines of defence frameworks.
- Previous experience with control design and independent and objective controls testing.
- Basic planning and/or project management skills.
- Data analytics and understanding of visualisation tools e.g., PowerBI and use of GRC Archer
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting or similar relevant field.
- Experience in a similar role including Risk Management, Internal or External Audit, SOX with a Big 4 or Medium-sized consultancy or other similar business function within a large organisation.
- Professional certification or equivalent in relevant area e.g. Certified Risk Manager (CRM) or similar, Certified Internal Auditor (CMIIA or CIA), Chartered or Certified Public Accountant (CPA, ACA, ACCA, ICAS) or, exceptionally, working towards such qualifications.
