**ROH National Schools Programme - Research Brief**

**Background**

ROH's mission is to enrich the cultural life of the nation. Through an extensive learning programme, based at our Covent Garden and Thurrock homes and across England, we aim to inspire creativity and give people of all ages the chance to discover, question and respond to the power of our artforms.

The learning programme is distinctive in its scale and ambitions, involving more than 50,000 annual participants across three strands; the National Schools Programme, talent development work through opera and ballet training networks, and enriching participatory events in our Covent Garden home.

The Royal Opera House's National Schools Programme empowers teachers to inspire creativity in children and young people through music, dance and design, reflecting the world-class ballet and opera artistry of the Royal Opera House. Developed through proven pedagogy and feedback, our flagship programmes are built to drive outstanding pupil, teacher and school outcomes. Our ambition is to provide the most flexible, change-making offer for schools in England looking to enhance their arts-based learning.

**Brief**

In order to increase our understanding of the resources available to support young people and other stakeholders to navigate the pathways into theatre crafts and wider arts careers associated with our organisation, we are seeking a researcher to identify good practice in creative careers information, advice and guidance. This research will inform the development of new ROH creative careers content.

It is anticipated this research will be commence in April 23 and conclude in June 23.

We are interested in increasing our understanding of:

- The content and information the cultural sector currently offers school staff, young people and parents across Key Stages 2-4
- The content and information the cultural sector currently offers to adults with relevant skills looking to move careers into the sector, as well as examples of effective messaging in other sectors we could learn from
- Effective and best practice IAG provided by other sectors that we can learn from

We seek to gain a better understanding of the range of stakeholders that need to be considered and best approaches to tailoring resources to align with the Key Stage 4 work related learning requirement as well as relevant resources for Key Stages 2 and 3 that respond to the needs of careers advisers, teachers, parents and young people.

The outcome of this research will include a final report that:

- Provides detailed analysis of the creative careers content currently available, highlighting good and relevant practice.
- Deepens our understanding of what best practice looks like within our sector and beyond.
- Supports our wider understanding of routes into the creative careers and how our resources might be used by a range of stakeholders
- Provides recommendations for how ROH might shape its own creative careers content with options scaled to a range of delivery budgets.

We anticipate this research will require 10-12 days of time to undertake

Applicants who are invited to interview will have demonstrated:

- Demonstrable expertise and experience of career pathways into the creative industries
- Demonstrable expertise and experience of delivering research for cultural, education, youth and/or community sectors
- An understanding of the ROH National Schools Programme and its research needs
- The ability to devise a bespoke package that responds to needs
- An approach that considers national reach
- A budget breakdown including how you will approach the brief and number of days/rates. Initial meetings with the team and a mid-point review discussion need to be factored into your proposal
