Working in Major Trauma in Nottingham is unique as you will be joining the busiest and biggest Major Trauma Centre in the UK. You will see a wide variety of trauma patients and learn how to coordinate their care as patients are admitted from all over the East Midlands, which covers a population of 5 million people over a wide geographical area. As a centre of excellence in the treatment of Major Trauma, the QMC is a single site multi-specialty hospital, optimised for the provision of trauma care. It is the primary receiving hospital of the East Midlands Trauma Network and manages all types of injuries, providing a 24 hour consultant led service.

The Major Trauma (MT) Consultant and multi-professional team coordinate the pathway of care for people with severe trauma injuries. Rehabilitation is commenced as early in the pathway as possible to maximise functional outcomes for the patient.

Applicants need to be motivated with a keen interest in the management of Major Trauma patients. Good communication skills are essential as is the ability to work within a multi-professional team across a number of different specialties.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible to the Major Trauma Consultant and will be involved in providing the medical care for patients on our Major Trauma ward over a seven day rota, including on-calls. The post holder will attend the Major Trauma daily ward round, all Major Trauma calls, clerk new patients, complete tertiary surveys and provide medical handover of patients for either single specialty or repatriation. The post holder will have theatre opportunities as required for Major Trauma patients and relevant to their base specialty. They will work closely with the multi professional team to coordinate the pathway for the multiply injured patients.

These are service posts so do not have educational approval, but successful applicants will be provided with excellent training and educational opportunities, tailored to meet individual needs.

In 2021 our Emergency Department became the new home of Channel 4’s BAFTA-nominated ‘24 Hours in A&E’. The documentary series marked its 10th year by relocating outside of London for the first time to the Queen’s Medical Centre. ‘24 Hours in A&E’ offers viewer’s a look inside the country’s busiest Emergency Departments and Major Trauma Centres. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Post holders can expect to enhance their knowledge and understanding of:

- Immediate lifesaving interventions by attending and participating in trauma calls in
- Interpreting initial investigations quickly including blood gas, X ray and CT results in
- Being part of the liaising with other members of the trauma team, from all different specialties and documenting findings and plans in the Major Trauma admissions documentation
- The main elements of a trauma call including how these should be coordinated and documented.
- The management of multi system trauma

Post holders can expect to become more skilled in:

- To build upon postgraduate clinical experience
- To develop further expertise in the identification and management of the sick patient
- To gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission, the development of strategies which might provide an alternative to admission and identifying where early discharge would be safe and appropriate
