Job overview

**Hip & Knee Arthroplasty Fellows**

Applications are invited for the above Lower Limb Arthroplasty Fellow posts from August 2024 and February 2025 within Nottingham Elective Orthopaedic Services, within Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

These are exciting opportunities to work in a specialist centre as part of a team of highly specialised surgeons, providing a regional tertiary complex arthroplasty service. Two fellowships available at any one time (hip and knee) and it's anticipated that Fellows will spend 6 months in each fellowship, with a possibility of undertaking one sub-specialty fellowship (can be discussed at interview).

The Knee Fellow will work under Mr Ben Bloch alongside Mr Reshid Berber/Mr Hosam Matar, and will be exposed to the whole breadth of knee arthroplasty including unicondylar, patellofemoral, primary total and revision knee arthroplasty.

The Hip Fellow will work under Mr Andrew Manktelow with Mr Mark Higgins gaining experience of a complex hip arthroplasty practice, including cemented, uncemented, resurfacing and revision arthroplasty.

Each Fellow will have 2 days minimum supervised operating/week. It's expected that the Fellows will progress towards additional unsupervised operating as trainers are satisfied with progress. There is opportunity to join other theatre lists, along with time for research/audit. Fellows are expected to contribute to the research output of the department.

Main duties of the job

The Lower Limb Arthroplasty Fellows will work with and receive training from Mr B Bloch and Mr A Manktelow. Both consultants are predominantly elective surgeons with Mr Bloch specialising in Knee Arthroplasty and Revision and Mr Manktelow specialising in all aspects of Complex Hip Surgery.

The fellows will attend all elective clinics and theatres for the consultants during the attachment. It is expected that the fellows will work for each trainer in turn spending up to 6 months with Mr Bloch and 6 months with Mr Manktelow. There is an on-call commitment covering the elective orthopaedic unit in this post, currently on a 1:9 basis.

A minimum of 2 full days supervised operating per week will be expected with opportunities for the fellow to undertake extra unsupervised operating when appropriate.

Working for our organisation

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) is the country’s fourth largest acute teaching trust. It was established on 1 April 2006 following the merger of Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen's Medical Centre. We established the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre (MTC) at NUH on April 1st 2012.

We provide acute and specialist services to 2.5 million people within Nottingham and surrounding communities from the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and the City Hospital campuses. We are a tertiary-level lower limb service performing complex revision hip and knee replacements for patients within our catchment and the surrounding areas.

We have an annual budget in excess of £682m of public sector funding and employ over 13,000 staff.

As an MTC, NUH is a multi-specialty hospital, on a single site, optimised for the provision of trauma care. It is the focus of the Trauma Network and manages all types of injuries, providing consultant-level care.
