**Job description**:
You will play a critical role at the heart of the Rail Infrastructure Group (RIG), working closely with a range of senior leaders to oversee the planning and delivery of one of the biggest infrastructure budgets in Whitehall. You will have the unique opportunity to handle a broad range of duties, therefore it is important that you are highly organised and adaptable to changing priorities.

You will be responsible for proactively identifying and managing a broad range of issues, making links across the portfolio, Department, Government and rail industry. You will utilise your strong organisational skills to ensure that the DG receives high quality advice and briefing in a timely way, prioritising what they need to know and when.

You will develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including the Permanent Secretary’s office, ministerial private offices and other DG offices, to ensure you are well-informed on cross-departmental business to and spot risks and opportunities for the DG and Group.

**Your key responsibilities will include**:

- Providing a seamless and high-quality service to the DG and Rail Infrastructure Group in a way that is responsive to quickly changing and competing priorities, including the DG’s additional responsibilities for the rail reform agenda.
- Ensuring the DG is fully briefed on relevant issues and well
- prepared for a range of high profile internal and external meetings, including with senior stakeholders and Ministers.
- Reviewing briefings on behalf of the DG, acting as a final layer of quality assurance, and subsequently providing feedback to teams on the DG’s preferences to build capabiity.
- Providing a secretariat function for the DG’s Senior Leadership Team, setting the agenda and forward look to maximise their time and ensure effective leadership of the Group.
- Line management of an EO Assistant Private Secretary/Diary Manager, focusing on their development and supporting them in their role.

**About you**

You will be an articulate communicator who enjoys collaborating with a range of senior stakeholders. You will be confident giving direction, influencing colleagues and managing upwards.

You will be comfortable acting independently, working on your own initiative and making decisions when required. You will be highly organised, proactive and thrive working within a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. You will display resilience and good judgement when faced with conflicting demands.

**Additional Information**

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

This role is available to individuals who wish to be spending their office time in London, Leeds or Birmingham, and we would also expect the individual to be willing to occasionally travel to visit different office locations.
