The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital is a dedicated paediatric centre offering an A&E, surgical theatres, High Dependancy Unit (HDU), inpatient wards and a large outpatient department. The imaging team works closely with clinicians and healthcare professionals to offer a wide range of imaging examinations including plain film, fluoroscopy, ultrasound and MRI.

The role of Radiographic Department Assistant is an exciting opportunity to work within a specialist department, to support patients and colleagues to provide the highest quality imaging and patient experience possible.

The Radiographic Department Assistant role combines both patient care and administrative responsibilities:

- Patient Care element involves assisting with a variety of imaging procedures including x-ray, fluoroscopy and ultrasound, as well as providing patient support when required
- Administrative tasks include working on reception, booking patients in for their procedures, answering phone calls from clinicians or parents, answering queries or escalating issues, as well as clerical duties such as booking appointments

Administrative Role
- Act as the point of contact for the department, greet patients on arrival and process imaging referrals appropriately
- Effectively use hospital software including CRIS, PACS, and Bamboo to maintain accurate and up to date patient records
- Ensure accurate input of patient and referral details, interpreting medical terminology, anatomical and physiological terms
- Process all electronic orders received via Bamboo, making updates where necessary and communicating with referrers where additional information might be required
- Organise imaging lists in ultrasound or fluoroscopy, managing rooms effectively to maximise department efficiency
- Organising MRI GA lists, communicating effectively with the MRI Superintendent Radiographers, Anaesthetists, and the theatre team in order to ensure the smooth running of these appointments
- Book patients on to appropriate lists via letter or by phone
- Communicate effectively with parents and patients, keeping in mind the age and mental capacity of the patient
- Arrange for additional support for appointments where necessary, including interpreters and the play specialist team
- Provision and collection of appropriate paperwork for patients and referrers depending on the examination
- Maintain health and safety in the department and report incidents and accidents to the appropriate pathways as soon as possible
- Manage work without supervision, seeking advice where necessary and act independently within appropriate guidelines. Use own judgement to prioritise tasks according to the needs of the service

Clinical Support Role
- Maintain excellent hygiene within the clinical area, using the appropriate methods to ensure equipment is cleaned between patients, and maintaining a good record of cleaning using the provided logs
- Gain a good understanding of the different clinical procedures that are performed in the department, so as to ensure the appropriate equipment is available before these appointments
- Communicate effectively with parents and patients, keeping in mind the age and mental capacity of the patient
- Assist with ultrasound and fluoroscopy lists by preparing the room with appropriate equipment, and ensuring patients are dressed appropriately
- Stock and replenish rooms on a daily basis, reporting any low or missing items to the Superintendent Radiographer a
