**Job Purpose**
The postholder will initially provide academic leadership and policy liaison to two existing, interdisciplinary programmes of research activity in conjunction with the senior Principal Investigator, acting as main point of contact to develop and lead research of international standard in the area of economic and climate determinants of health inequalities. A key part of this role will be externally facing, via advisory roles and working in close partnership with colleagues in government and non-governmental organisations to ensure research relevance and uptake. As the role develops you will establish an independent research profile and distinctive research programme, delivering internationally recognised research outputs, and securing substantial external funding.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. Proactively support the senior Principal Investigator in providing academic leadership, advice and direction to established programmes of research activity, including managing high-level relationship with non-academic partners partnership management,.
3. Develop and sustain a portfolio of individual and joint research projects and secure the
funding required to underpin the long-term growth of the research activity.
4. Develop and sustain a pipeline of research publications of leading international quality in journals and presentations at national and international conferences, enhancing the reputation of the School/College/University.
5. Take on substantial responsibilities associated with managing external stakeholder relationships that enhance the University’s reputation, advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.
6. Represent the Unit/School/College/University on key external bodies and at significant external events nationally and internationally to promote excellence in research, teaching and/or knowledge translation.
7. Undertake supervision/management of research students and staff and ensure their effective development and deployment.
8. Develop research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University, including multi-disciplinary links, and develop external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.
9. Oversee and manage the direction, development and improvement of the research programme infrastructure and facilities by guiding the input of University colleagues,
external collaborators and practice partners.
11. Where appropriate, participate fully in assessment and examination processes using a variety of methods and provide feedback to students that is relevant, timely and supports their learning.
12. Seek out and deliver knowledge exchange opportunities aligned with research programme and Institute objectives.
13. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including HR/Budgets/Expenditure.
14. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
15. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
16. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic World Changers Together.

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**:

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or equivalent senior policy/practice experience related to public health and/or wellbeing inequalities.
A2 An established reputation for high-quality research or analysis related to public health and/or wellbeing inequalities.

**Skills**

**Essential**:

C1 Excellent leadership skills, with a track record of significant contributions to the delivery of large-scale interdisciplinary research programmes, policy processes or similar initiatives.
C2 Proven people and project management skills, including experience of working effectively in interdisciplinary or multi-sectoral contexts.
C3 Ability to inspire, foster collegiality and promote collaborative working.
C4 Proven skills in supervision and mentorship, especially supporting the career development of more junior colleagues.
C5 A willingness and ability to engage with the current and future priorities of Unit, School and University strategies, aims and ambitions in particular in relation to challenge of tackling health inequalities.
C6 Excellent oral and written research communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels in academic, policy and practitioner communities.

**Desirable**:

D1 Leadership and management skills beyond the immediate programme of work, e.g. by chairing committees or leading on the development and delivery of key processes and initiatives.
