We are looking for a bright, committed and enthusiastic individual to join the Newborn Hearing Screening Team at Northampton General Hospital Trust.

To work as a member of the team participating in the hearing screening of newborn babies on the labour ward, the post-natal wards, Special care baby unit and in outpatient clinics, under the supervision of the Senior Screener and the Local Manager. This post will involve direct handling of new-born babies and contact with parents.

To undertake specific formal training in Newborn Hearing Screening.Currently this involves e-learning, observation, formal training, a Diploma in Health Screening (level 3) and an NHSP external competency assessment (ECA)

To identify all newborn babies who require a hearing screen via the national database and the birth register.

Monitor and track babies in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and screen at the appropriate time in liaison with ward staff.

To ensure that parents/carers are fully informed of the clinical procedures, data protection procedures and possible reasons for unclear responses and then obtain informed consent/decline. Other language leaflets and interpreters should be used when required.

To work independently using own initiative based on your training to screen babies hearing without supervision, using the correct screening technique at the appropriate time within the maternity unit, including the delivery suite and SCBU to maximise the number of babies screened in hospital.

To counsel parents/carers about screening outcomes and options for further assessment/management.

To negotiate mutually acceptable appointments for babies requiring hearing screening in outpatient clinics or follow up diagnostic assessment in the relevant clinic.

Using the clinical data obtained identify babies needing targeted ongoing surveillance as per national protocols.

To collate and accurately record clinical and test data using the National Database, maintaining security and confidentiality of patient information.

To promote a professional, welcoming, and caring environment endorsing a Family

Friendly approach to care. Proactively keep parents/carers, team members and other health care professionals informed of all relevant and appropriate information in relation to the Trust and the National NHSP protocols.

To always ensure the safety and security of equipment, carry out and record daily and weekly calibration checks and report any problems or faults to the NHSP Manager at the earliest opportunity.

Be aware of and adhere to all local Health and Safety Regulations.

To monitor stock levels and reorder as appropriate in conjunction with the Local Manager.

To ensure patients and families retain their dignity, privacy, and individuality at all times.

After appropriate training maintain an awareness of safeguarding children issues and adhere to local procedures regarding raising concerns.

To maintain a clean clinical environment following all infection prevention procedures

To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of all Trust and NHSP procedures and policies relevant to the post and undertake continual professional developme
