***About the role**

We have a new opportunity for a Deputy General Counsel with extensive commercial experience to partner with the business, provide strategic guidance and advice and participate in commercial decisions, lead key legal initiatives and lead our in-house legal function.

Reporting into the Group General Counsel, you will work closely with the Executive Management Team and business leaders across the organisation.

As the Deputy General Counsel you will possess a deep substantive expertise, strong business judgement and an international perspective.

***In this role you will be**:

- Leading our in-house legal function
- Leading the team to ensure that strategic, pragmatic and commercially astute legal advice is provided to senior stakeholders and all other functions within the business, on matters as broad ranging as, commercial contracts, M&A, financings, dispute resolution, construction & engineering, real estate and employment and immigration.
- Closely managing a budget with discipline, as well as ensuring effective engagement with our external lawyers across multiple territories in order to find timely and best suited responses.
- Developing the team to ensure roles and individuals are appropriate to the needs of the Group. Actively seeking to develop team members, identifying and maximising their skills.
- Developing effective ways of working, structures and procedures to provide a responsive and high quality legal team fostering a best in class function that keeps pace with the evolving needs of Ocado.
- Foster the reputation of the legal team as facilitators of development, transactions, solutions and commercial strategies as well as creating a team environment which in turn ensures the engagement and sustainable contribution of all members.
- Working closely alongside the Chief IP Officer and Chief Compliance Officer to ensure the company meets all of its regulatory and legal obligations as a public listed company and manages legal and commercial risk effectively**.**

***About you**
- Extensive experience as a qualified lawyer within a law firm and ideally within an international B2B company
- Proven experience in structuring, negotiating and drafting documentation and handling disputes effectively
- Experience assessing potential challenges, identifying and managing risk, and proactively managing outcomes with creativity and strategic planning.
- Proven experience of operating in a listed environment with familiarity of rules for listed companies and corporate governance
- The ability to manage and work with outside counsel and appropriately assess when consultation with outside counsel is appropriate, or when matters may be handled in-house
- Experience of managing budgets with discipline
- The ability to work in an environment with clients who need and demand pragmatic legal advice
- Track record of operating at senior management level, influencing and building relationships
- Ability to motivate and inspire a team to the highest level of performance with a focus on personal development
- Excellent communication skills and able to influence effectively
- High levels of resilience and ability to deal with ambiguity.
