Early Printed Books Cataloguer

**Balliol College is seeking to recruit an early printed books cataloguer to support the ongoing cataloguing of an estimated 16,000 early printed items in the College’s library, getting records for these onto SOLO and achieving a consistently high standard of copy specific information.**
Balliol College is one of the largest and longest established colleges in the University of Oxford. It exists to advance education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, to facilitate and to encourage scholarship and research at the very highest levels, and to promote excellence in learning.
The Library supports the College’s aims by delivering 24-hour access to the resources and working environment to support undergraduate and postgraduate study and collecting, preserving and promoting the College’s intellectual heritage, at Balliol’s two library sites and online.
**Purpose of job**: To catalogue the early printed items in the College’s library to Bodleian standards with a high level of copy specific information.

**Hours of work**:The normal hours of work 15 hours (2 days) per week. There is some flexibility about when these hours are worked. This is a fixed term post for two years.
**Salary**:Oxford University Grade 6: 32,332-41,732 pro rata
**Holiday**: 30 days paid leave per year pro rata (12 days per year).
**Other benefits**:A two-course hot meal when the College kitchens are open. Oxford University Staff Pension Scheme - contributions being made by the post holder and by the College. There is also a bus pass scheme.
**Principle responsibilities**
- Create or update bibliographic records for Balliol’s early printed collections on Alma.
- Research and record detailed copy-specific information for the collections on Alma.
- Use strategies such as templates for copy specific information to reach the ambitious targets set by the project.
- Check and update the College’s holdings on ESTC where appropriate.
- Support and train colleagues in the library team to catalogue to Oxford’s local standards for early printed books.
- Contribute to talks, exhibitions, publications and other forms of public outreach to promote the collection.
- Collect statistics on the numbers of books catalogued for report to Library Committee on a termly basis, and to provide details of any highlights or items of specific interest for inclusion in the Library Committee report.

**Requirements**:
**Essential**
- A relevant first degree.
- A relevant qualification in libraries, archives or historical and descriptive bibliography.
- Practical experience of early printed books cataloguing using DCRMR, MARC 21, LCSH and RDA.
- Practical experience of researching and recording copy specific information for early printed books.
- Informed understanding of early printed book production.
- Knowledge of the ESTC (English Short Title Catalogue).
- Understanding of good practice in handling and other preservation measures for special collections.
- Excellent time management and ability to work to ambitious targets.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work flexibly and in collaboration with colleagues in a small team.
- Ability to solve problems and take a creative approach to work.
- Interest in working with both public and academic audiences.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
**Desirable**
- Detailed knowledge of early modern history and print culture.
- Knowledge of early modern palaeography.
- Reading knowledge of Latin.
- Experience of working in academic libraries.
- Experience of outreach and promotion for special collections.
