**Job summary**:

- This position can be based at Crewe or Manchester**Job description**:
Do you have a passion for nature and the environment? Do you want to make a real difference and secure significant environmental gains in the present and the future? Do you enjoy working in a team? Can you see yourself advising communities and customers to maximise gains for the Natural Environment?

If this appeals to you, a career at Natural England offers rewarding opportunities to secure environmental improvements and play your part in creating a better future for people and nature.

The priority work Natural England is delivering includes:

- Establishing a Nature Recovery Network to help wildlife thrive
- Monitoring environmental changes to identify and help reduce the effects of climate change
- Working with farmers and landowners to develop greener food production methods
- Advising on plans for new developments to maximise gains for nature, and
- Providing ways for people to better connect with nature, including green social prescribing.

We are the Government’s Adviser for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious vision which brings new opportunities to protect and enhance and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.

Job description

We provide environmental leadership across an area of 6 million people and home to some magnificent natural assets, where nature recovery and partnerships are at the heart of everything we do. Restoring habitats, reconnecting the natural environment and connecting people with nature across the Lancashire uplands of West Pennine Moors and Bowland Fells, the wetlands and rivers of Cheshire, the wildlife-rich Irish Sea coast and urban heartland of Greater Manchester and Liverpool City Region.

In 2023 we have an ambitious plan to build a resilient natural environment. We want to support flourishing landscapes that are a source of pride, rural employment, access and enjoyment. We want to continue to develop and expand our farm advice to deliver more benefits across mosaics of habitats for biodiversity, water quality, air quality, flood management, climate change and the wider farmed environment, and to develop Countryside Stewardship agreements with local Nature Recovery and Species Recovery.

The role

This post will develop close working links with local and regional community partners and our health partners, in particular the National Academy of Social Prescribing (NASP), and support the offer of nature-based activities in communities within the NW as one of the options available on social prescription. You will work closely with our Health and Environment Senior Adviser and Inclusion Senior Adviser to improve connection to nature within local communities. You will also work collaboratively across the Cheshire to Lancashire Area Team, to develop and cascade good practice and learning into Natural England’s other delivery programmes.

“Green social prescribing is the practice of supporting people to engage in nature-based interventions and activities to improve their mental health. Social prescribing link workers [and other trusted professionals in allied roles] connect people to community groups and agencies for practical and emotional support, based on a ‘what matters to you’ conversation” Activities could include walking, cycling and community gardening and food growing.

Key accountabilities
- Work with NASP and the regional hub to enable voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) groups to offer quality GSP activities.
- Advise and support local VCSE organisations, so that they can develop new nature-based activities and services alongside innovative partnerships.
- Understand what GSP provision is available and match that to local need.
- Build an understanding of the scale and distribution of local health needs relevant to green activities and use this knowledge to develop a toolkit to unlock and access green social prescription activities and services, and to promote wider connection between people and nature.
- Support the NHS Regional Link Worker Learning Coordinators to help strengthen links with the commissioners of health and social care services and key local health professionals.
- Work to incorporate health across other work areas in Natural England. Advise and guide the Cheshire to Lancashire Area Team on how to develop and shape Natural England’s health agenda delivery, which could includ
