**Primary Location** UK-ENG-London

**Job** Economics

**Organisation** 532000 - MONETARY ANALYSIS

**Job Posting** 09-Feb-2023, 3:16:51 AM

The Bank of England is the UK's central bank. Our mission is to deliver monetary and financial stability for the British people.

The Bank of England is a diverse organisation. Each of its 4,000 plus people are committed to public service and dedicated to promoting the good of the people of the United Kingdom by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

Monetary Analysis (MA) provides the core analytic support that underpins the setting of Bank Rate each month by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to meet the inflation target. We are closely linked to the MPC Unit, which supports the external members of the MPC.

**Department Overview**

Within MA, Monetary and Financial Conditions Division (MFCD) produces expert analysis on monetary, credit and financial conditions and the transmission of monetary policy. We also design and evaluate the monetary policy toolkit. MFCD works very closely with a variety of other areas of the Bank, particularly the Markets Directorate, but also with Financial Stability Strategy and Risk and the Prudential Regulation Authority.
- and macro-prudential policies. The Credit, Banking and Finance (CBF) team analyses credit provision to the real economy - including both bank credit and capital markets financing - and the transmission of policy rates through the banking sector to lending rates. The Interest Rates and Asset Prices (IRAP) team extracts policy-relevant information from financial markets and assesses the evolution of financial conditions. A team of Research Assistants (RAs) provide support to the division across these areas.

**Job description**

Do you have strong data and problem-solving skills and a desire to support economic policymaking? We are looking for a Senior Research Assistant to join our established team. This is a great opportunity to observe and support monetary policymaking, and to gain first-hand experience of how data and analysis are used in the process. You would play a key role in supporting our policy advice and research by, for example:

- Contributing to the production of presentations and briefing for the MPC, collaborating closely with economists in the division and in the Markets Directorate.
- Together with the other RAs, producing the yield curves that are used widely around the Bank and published on the external website, and handling external queries on these data.
- Developing expertise on financial market data used by the division, including on its sources and quality. Using this knowledge to support colleagues at all levels of seniority across the Bank on its use.
- Updating models and analysis.
- Identifying and problem-solving issues with data and data-related processes when they arise, and working with others to get them resolved promptly.
- Helping to improve our existing data and models, and the processes underlying these. For example by generating and implement ideas for automating and streamlining models or data analysis using R or other software.

**Role Requirements**

**Minimum Essential Criteria**
- Ability to work well in a team, and the interpersonal skills to manage a wide variety of colleagues across the organisation effectively.
- Ability to deliver calmly and effectively under pressure, and prioritise tasks shrewdly when faced with demanding timescales.
- Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to think creatively to identify, design and implement workable solutions to problems, particularly those relating to data, data-systems and processes.
- Strong numerical and data manipulation skills, including using Excel. A willingness and ability to learn how to use other data analysis software, particularly R.
- An attention to detail - an appreciation of the importance of, and commitment to the complete, accurate and clear presentation of information.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Strong existing coding skills (particularly familiarity with one or more of R, Matlab, VBA). But training and support can be provided.
- Experience of using providers of financial and economic data such as Bloomberg and Eikon.
- Background knowledge, or interest, in economics, financial markets or data analysis.
