The main duties of a failsafe officer are to check the points on the screening pathway and to make sure processes are in place to ensure all consented Antenatal and Newborn screening tests are performed in a timely manner as per national standards. The Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) failsafe officer supports the antenatal and newborn screening coordinators in the collation and entry of data for the antenatal and newborn screening programmes, Infectious Diseases in Pregnancy, Down’s syndrome screening and Fetal Anomaly Screening, Haemoglobinopathy screening, Newborn Infant Physical examination, and Newborn Bloodspot Screening, also including relevant vaccination programmes.

The failsafe officer will identify screening coverage of the eligible population and ensure safety of the screening programmes. They will work closely with the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Managers to facilitate failsafe mechanisms to identify and also prevent missed screening opportunities and maintain an audit trail for all of the above mentioned screening programmes.

The ANNB failsafe officer will also maintain and evolve mechanisms to collect cohort data for the key performance indicators (KPI), and for the National Screening Committee Annual Report for Antenatal and Newborn Screening, including the Congenital Anomalies Register (CAR) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) Quarterly data.

The ANNB failsafe officer will be expected to communicate with other professionals involved in the screening process.

The post holder will provide support to the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Managers for the Antenatal and Newborn Screening programmes, working within strict departmental and national procedures with responsibility for receiving, maintaining and providing manual and electronic data containing sensitive and confidential screening information.

Establishing and effectively managing screening databases for Antenatal and Newborn Screening ensuring that working procedures adhere to Data protection requirements of the IT systems used within the Trust.

Collating and inputting patient clinical and non-clinical data and screening outcome details onto the screening database, focusing on constant process improvement.

Manage NIPE systems and failsafe Newborn Blood spot system. Be part of the national NIPE user group, and partake in testing on upgrades of system.

Providing accurate and timely statistical screening data to the screening co-ordinators and other colleagues as required.

Report screening incidents via DATIX

Liaising with external stakeholders where appropriate including the SIT/SQAS teams.

Support the wider team with initiation of Business Continuity plans when appropriate.

The post holder will be based across the two campus’s and will need to be able to work flexibly according to needs of the service.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Support the Antenatal and newborn screening Managers to develop, maintain and monitor screening database systems to support the Antenatal and Newborn Screening programmes

Ensure that all antenatal and newborn screening data is compliant with the National Key Performance Indicators.

Assists in the collation of information and the production of the Annual Screening Report.

Assists in the collation of information and the production for the Quality Assurance fail safe visits.

Support the Antenatal and newborn screening Managers in organising the Quality Assurance visits, ensuring all the documents submitted on time and making sure rooms and time tables are created.

Assists in the collation of information and the completion of the National Disease Registration Service forms.

Assists in the collation of information and the production of national data submissions.

Escalates any missed screening to the Antenatal and newborn screening Managers as a priority.

Is able to identify and escalate problems that may affect the quality of the data and subsequent reports.

Inputs accurate and timely data into Maternity systems

Supports projects relating to data collection as required.

Work flexibly and undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as required

Has a polite and professional manner when communicating with other professionals and outside agencies

Participate in Joint Annual Personal Development Review with line Managers.
