The Role

The Faculty of Medical Sciences is committed to developing the research leaders of the future and we are looking to appoint two post-doctoral Faculty Fellows working in any area that aligns closely with one of our Faculty Research Themes.

Our Faculty Fellowships are designed for early career researchers who have an excellent track record for their career stage and have the ambition to develop an original research idea and secure external fellowship funding.

This is a two-year fellowship that places you in one of our stimulating Research Institutes and offers you:

- Dedicated mentoring from experienced researchers
- Training opportunities to support your early success in obtaining an externally funded fellowship
- Peer support from a cross-disciplinary cohort of talented early career researchers
- Modern specialist research facilities

Our appointments are fully flexible which means that we can accommodate part time working as needed.

As part of our commitment to career development for research staff, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles. These profiles set out firstly the generic competences and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and secondly the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level. The responsibilities of the Faculty Fellowship are set out in the context of the Role Profile “Research Associate - Level F” on page 6 of the document.

Key Accountabilities
To develop an area of research and personal expertise, in collaboration with senior staff, that will start to develop your independent research career, aligned to an existing research group and within the Faculty’s key research themes
To maintain and build on an excellent publication record
To further develop internal and external collaborations in support of your research theme and, where appropriate, to contribute to local research group meetings
To plan and keep under review an appropriate career path in partnership with a designated mentor and fully participate in the University’s Conversations and Priorities process, including determining training needs
To monitor and manage any monies associated with this fellowship
Develop research links with a research team in at least one external institution by the end of the fellowship period

The Person
Expertise in a specific research area that can lead to the development of own research area
An excellent publication record, appropriate to career stage and specialism
An ability to formulate and articulate a research plan suitable for development into an externally funded fellowship
Demonstrable experience of relevant, advanced research methods, tools and techniques appropriate to the research theme
Awareness of ethical issues involved in their area of research
Ability to assess and evaluate concepts/theories and develop original solutions
High-level problem-solving capability
Ability to communicate complex information with clarity
Good organisation skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Experience of building links with research groups outside of their home institution
Desirable
Experience of presentation of work at conferences, meetings or poster events
Evidence of project management experience
Experience of designing and delivering research projects
