London, United Kingdom Willis Towers Watson Full time

Senior Catastrophe Modeller - Part Time
- London, GB

June 29, 2023

An exciting opportunity to join an established industry-driven research network team to support WTW’s efforts to be the best risk advisors for clients and to shape the WTW “view of risk”. Through your scientific knowledge of natural catastrophes, you will help WTW evaluate models, develop model adjustments, and undertake wider modelling advisory.

The role is available on a part time, 3 day a week basis. Preferably this would be Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday due to team meetings, but can be flexible. It is aligned to our Hybrid workstyle, a mix of office and home based working.

**The Role**

In this role you will report into the Head of Modelling Research and Innovation, and will be responsible for the evaluation of third-party natural catastrophe models, as well as the development of the WTW View of Risk. Your experience and knowledge of natural hazard and/or vulnerability will be instrumental in assisting our clients in understanding and managing natural catastrophe risk. You will also undertake wider modelling advisory on a range of topics, including non-modelled risks, scenario analysis, and climate change.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

- Evaluating third-party natural catastrophe models for a range of perils (windstorms, wildfires, floods, earthquakes).
- Developing the WTW View of Risk, including adjustments for model limitations, near-term climate conditions, and claims experience.
- Working with clients, jointly with other WTW commercial teams, on advisory projects, especially when these require leading-edge research to be applied, or expert judgement.
- Creating and giving presentations to clients, for example on model evaluation findings or the impacts of climate change on natural catastrophes.
- Contributing to thought leadership on modelling topics (blogs, webinars, conferences, client events), and your continued links to academia (if any) will be encouraged.
- Staying abreast of the latest scientific research, identifying emerging issues and trends, summarising findings and potential materiality to current/future business strategy.

Client-focus:

- Assess the credibility of the models we use on behalf of our clients: as trusted risk advisor, WTW will often use risk models to quantify risk for our clients, whether those models are proprietary or licensed from 3rd party, we need to ensure that they are credible, robust and add value.
- Help shape the evaluation of model adjustments to differentiate us from our competitors: when we use the same models as our competitors (e.g., RMS), model sensitivity analysis, independent validation and evaluation is key to support our value-added services. The aim is to provide a client-bespoke service, and this could
- involve collaboration with our current and future academic and/or commercial partners.

Innovation-focus:

- Exposure management modelling gaps to shape our innovation pipeline:
- Identify where current models are insufficient or limited to assist WTW and its clients to address modelling gaps and implement innovative solutions to address these.
- Identify new modelling techniques (Artificial Intelligence: Machine learning, neural networks, natural language ).

Support the due diligence process followed when we consider strategic partnerships:
- Evaluate science-related credentials of potential partners, and the value added.
- You will work closely with:
- The Head of Modelling Research and Innovation.
- WRN research managers to tap into the existing research portfolio, and shape future research.
- Key WTW stakeholders (e.g., Insurance Consulting & Technology, Climate and Resilience Hub) to create a relevant service offering that supports their client work.

**The Requirements**
- Demonstratable research experience (PhD, MSc or equivalent work experience) in a relevant field (e.g., meteorology, hydrology, seismology, vulnerability).
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including an understanding of probability concepts, and experience of using programming language such as R and Python.
- Ability to adapt and learn new areas of expertise to address an evolving risk landscape.
- Excellent presentation and writing skills with experience of communicating technical information to an audience of varied stakeholders.
- Project management and prioritisation skills.
- Enthusiasm, self-motivated and a team player.

Desirable:

- Experience of using natural catastrophe models (e.g., RMS, AIR).
- Experience of model evaluation.
- Experience of using GIS, statistical or analytical tools.
- Experience of scenario analysis.
- Knowledge of (or an interest in) insurance industry practices and regulation (e.g., Solvency II).
