**About us**
The Gurkha Welfare Trust provides vital support to Gurkha veterans, their families and communities in Nepal. We have been working in Nepal for over 50 years, delivering essential financial and medical aid to Gurkha veterans and widows, and working with local communities to provide access to clean water and education. We also build earthquake-resilient homes for our most vulnerable pensioners.
Our UK office is in the historic Cathedral city of Salisbury and is the base for our Fundrais ing, Marketing & Communications, Finance and Administration teams. We also have two Gurkha Welfare Advice Centres (GWAC), in Salisbury and Aldershot, which offer advice and support to retired Gurkhas and their families who choose to settle in the UK.
The Finance Assistant (Payables/Payroll) is a new position within a small UK based finance team reporting to the Head of Finance who is responsible for financial management of the Gurkha Welfare Trust in both UK and Nepal.
The postholder will be responsible for the accurate and timely payment of all invoices and staff expenses through payables, monthly payroll, banking of cash and cheques and all supporting reconciliations.
The postholder will have the ability to own and manage their own workload, be a team player and able to respond to short notice changes in work priorities. The postholder will have strong attention to detail, demonstrate accuracy in their work and be honest and reliable.
**MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
This role’s primary responsibilities will be as follows:
- Accurate and timely payment of all invoices ensuring proper authorisation is in place
- Accurate and timely payment of staff and volunteer expenses ensuring proper authorisation is in place
- Monthly reconciliation of all office credit card expenditure
- Preparing monthly payroll and all RTI submissions to HMRC
- Ensuring the accurate and timely payment of all employer and employee pension contributions to personal pension schemes
- Banking of cash and cheque receipts
- Maintaining and reconciling petty cash
- Preparing monthly bank reconciliations
- Accurate posting of all transactions within the accounting system (IRIS - PS Financials)
- Reconciling key balance sheet accounts (payables, prepayments, expenses) and liaising with suppliers as appropriate
**KEY SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE, AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES**
Applicants for this position should be able to satisfy the following criteria:
**Essential**:
- An accounting qualification (AAT or similar)
- At least 2 years experience within a small finance team, with experience of accounting software, payables, general ledger and initiating on-line bank payments.
- Physical banking of cash and preparing monthly bank reconciliations.
- Experience of payroll in a small office environment.
- Competent user of MS-Office; Word and Excel.
- Attention to detail.
- Shows initiative in identifying problems and resolving
- Able to plan workload and work to a timetable.
**Desirable**:
- Experience of charity accounts and financial management.
- Experience of IRIS - PS Financials accounting system.
- Experience of Moneysoft (payroll).
- Organised and motivated.
- Ability to work within and support a wider team.
