Liverpool, United Kingdom The Cares Family Full time

Job description

The Cares Family’s vision is of **socially connected communities** in which people feel **less lonely, more united** and that they **belong**. Our mission is to **bring people together across generations, backgrounds and experiences **to build community and connection. As our Head of Communications you will shape our communications function to help shift public narratives, attitudes and behaviours around the issues that matter to us; ensure the sustainability of our organisation and philosophy and, ultimately, to spur a ripple effect of connection across the UK.

**ABOUT THIS ROLE**
As **Head of Communications**, you will lead the **development and delivery of communications** across The Cares Family group of charities. You will shape our communications function to help **shift public narratives, attitudes and behaviours** around the issues that matter to us; **ensure the sustainability of our organisation and philosophy** and, ultimately, to **spur a ripple effect of connection across the UK**.

This is an exciting time to join our **friendly, high performing and ambitious **team. The Projects Directorate is the newest part of The Cares Family: in the last two years we have launched The Multiplier to support community leaders across the UK; **set up new initiatives to surface the voices of people in our communities** in new ways; and launched our **campaigns strategy**.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**
The list below is not exhaustive of all the functions of the Head of Communications, but it describes much of the role:

- **Lead and execute communications at The Cares Family**, updating our communications strategy as necessary to re-establish desired goals, audiences, contacts and messages and to distribute responsibilities across the staff team(s):

- **Lead national communications planning**, ensuring consistent, high-quality content across all our owned platforms.
- **Create and action a media plan **with the aims of sharing stories about our work and advancing our messages in the local and national press, and leading on press requests.
- **Proactively build relationships with journalists** to develop our network and increase press opportunities.
- **Work with all five of our local charities** to centre the voices of older and younger people in our storytelling, and develop your own content at the national level to ensure our messages are achieving their desired impact.
- **Develop and deliver new communications products and processes** as required.
- **Update The Cares Family’s communications guidance** to ensure a consistency of voice and to build teams’ confidence in, and successful ownership of, storytelling:

- **Lead on the creation and delivery of bespoke training** for our five local charities, including putting in place monitoring and evaluation plans.
- **Ensure regular delivery of new-starter storytelling training.**
- **Undertake regular quality assurance of our social media output.**
- **Work with Heads of Projects, Campaigns and Development** to create communications plans for their individual functions.
- **Shape communications processes** that enable us to deliver stories in the most effective and efficient ways:

- **Develop a national storytelling blast** to keep key partners and supporters engaged in our mission and informed of our progress.
- **Hold our relationship with our website developers**, quality assuring our six websites by using data to analyse and improve engagement.
- **Lead a refresh of our national website.**
- **In your work you will also**:

- **Work as part of our Projects team** to help deliver our organisational strategy.
- **Represent** **The Cares Family at events** - promoting our work, building our profile and enhancing our reputation.
- **Support the Director of Projects with ongoing administration** and other tasks on an ad hoc basis;
- Undertake **other duties** as required by The Cares Family to support our mission;
- Ensure all of the above is done in line with our **anti-racist and inclusion action plan**.**

**ABOUT YOU**

All of the above requires a broad set of skills, and to succeed in this role, you will be:

- **Passionate** about our mission, philosophy, values and programmes.
- **An authentic, high-quality communicator, with exceptional written, spoken and listening skills **with a minimum of three years’ experience in communications, the media and/or storytelling.
- Experienced in **seeding stories in the media** and building and maintaining good relationships with journalists.
- **A strategic thinker**, at ease managing detail whilst understanding and responding to the big picture.
- **A natural storyteller and communicator** with the ability to work with partners and colleagues to tell emotive stories and create a long-term narrative.
