Postdoctoral Research Associate in Ocean Sciences

This position forms a part of the NERC-funded Ocean Bound project, developing an exciting new way to understand how the global ocean circulation works, and how it influences sea level and climate, via the role of pressure on the continental slope. The project is a collaboration with British Antarctic Survey, who will be providing ocean modelling and adjoint modelling expertise.

We seek a scientist with an interest in the physics of the global ocean circulation, and expertise in both the associated maths, and in calculating and interpreting diagnostics from ocean models. You will have a PhD in physical oceanography.
You will be testing and helping to develop theoretical ideas about how the ocean circulation works, building on recent discoveries of the value of ocean boundary pressure as a tool for synthesis of ideas.

The research will take place in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences, in the School of Environmental Sciences. The PI is Professor Chris W. Hughes, who is also an Adjunct Fellow of the neighbouring National Oceanography Centre. There will be strong links and frequent meetings with British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge (some in person, most online), where the PI is Dr Dan(i) Jones of the Polar Oceans team.

The Department, and wider University, provide a strongly supportive environment for postdoctoral researchers. The University is a signatory to the Researcher Development Concordat, and provides networking and development opportunities through the successful Prosper portal, in conjunction with the Universities of Manchester and Lancaster.

**Duties**:
Diagnose and interpret ocean bottom pressure and its changes from a range of ocean models, including the CMIP6 ensemble, together with related quantities.
Use observation-based products to make similar calculations for the real ocean.
Collaborate with the PIs and with a BAS postdoc to develop and synthesise understanding of the global circulation.
Classify model and observational results according to this synthesis, to interpret future climate projections make recommendations for model development.
Contribute to writing and publishing of papers on the analysis.
Contribute to publicising results, through conference presentation and outreach activities.
Undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as required.
