We are looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the duration of up to 24 months for this post which is available to commence on 1st January 2024.

The project is funded by The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) and the aim of the project will be to study and prevent HIV-1 mother to child transmission via breastfeeding. Despite great progress in HIV-1 research and antiretroviral treatment development some two to five percent of children will acquire the virus via breastfeeding during the initial weeks of life.

The study, a clinical trial, will take place in Tanzania and Mozambique and will recruit more than two thousand pregnant women. Our role in this project will be to study the viral parameters associated with HIV-1 transmission.

We will study the viral break-through infections in children despite the administration of antiretroviral therapy.

The molecular characteristics of the virus will be studied which requires experience in bioinformatics and knowledge of next generation sequence platforms, more specifically, Oxford Nanopore methodology with proficiency on the associated analysis pipelines.

The aim will be the virus genome sequencing, investigation and analysis for the presence of mutations conferring resistance to antivirals.

Furthermore, the virus envelope protein will be investigated using state-of-the-art pseudo-typed viral particle tools for its reactivity to broadly neutralising antibodies, with potential future treatment strategies identified. The later work requires knowledge of Cell culture methodologies with implementation of transfection and transduction of cell lines required for the production of Pseudo-type virus particles and subsequent testing of immune sera and commercial antibodies according to established methodologies and protocols.

The post will be based in the Department of Clinical Infection, Microbiology and Immunology, one of three departments within the Institute of Infection, Ecological and Veterinary Sciences (IVES), joining a highly dynamic and scientifically productive team, with excellent publication output and a track record of good citizenship and collegiality.

Any applicants who are still awaiting their PhD to be awarded should be aware that if successful, they will be appointed at grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that they have been successful in being awarded their PhD, they will be moved onto grade 7, spine point 31 from the date of their award.
