Trainee First Contact Practitioner

Newburn, United Kingdom North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust Full time

As part of the NHS Long-Term Plan and the strategic direction of NEAS, an exciting opportunity has arisen for experienced paramedics to develop an advanced clinical career.

The Trainee First Contact Practitioner (FCP) is an experienced Paramedic who has completed a Higher Educational Institute course in clinical assessment and treatment skills and is able to demonstrate a determination to develop their advanced clinical practice credentials. This is underpinned by BSc level education in a relevant training programme approved by the College of Paramedics. The Trainee FCP must have successfully completed their two-year Consolidation of Learning period as a newly qualified paramedic and have a further three years experience working as a band 6 (or equivalent) paramedic. The Trainee FCP role requires the clinician to work across several areas in a regional rotational model. This will include working into some areas of Primary Care, providing an emergency response to all categories of patients and telephone assessment of patients as part of the NEAS Clinical Advisory Service (CAS). There will be a requirement for every Trainee FCP to complete staged competency training prior to being deployed into the Primary Care aspect of the role and undergo further training within a specified timeframe to develop into the First Contact Practitioner role.

We employ 3,500 staff in 63 locations and serve a population of 2,600,000 in Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham, and Tees over 3230 square miles.

Many people think the job of the ambulance service is to collect patients and take them to hospital, but we do much more

Paramedic skills have developed hugely in recent years, meaning we carry out more treatment at the scene and en-route to hospital.

We have a dedicated clinical assessment service that allows us to provide patients with the most appropriate care from the beginning of the patient journey.

We have a specialised branch of the Trust called HART which deal with explosions or terrorist attacks.

Ultimately patients are the heart of everything that we do to support our mission of "safe, effective and responsive care for all".
