**Job summary**:
The Cabinet Office and HM Treasury operate at the heart of the UK government. These iconic departments are responsible for ensuring the effective running of government, maintaining control over public spending and working to achieve strong and sustainable growth for the UK.
To deliver on their objectives, both departments rely on partners in their supply chain to deliver critical services. The Cabinet Office & HM Treasury (COHMT) Commercial directorate exists to enable delivery through this supply chain. That means supporting the business to effectively procure and manage contracts with suppliers across a very wide range of services. The team of approximately 70 commercial professionals works in partnership with all areas of the business, providing a commercial service that covers planning, commercial strategy, sourcing and contract management on circa £800m of third party spend.
Due to a recent promotion for the incumbent, we are now looking for a new Chief of Staff to join the team and work closely with the Commercial Director, taking responsibility for overseeing the effective operation and management of the directorate and supporting the people who work here.
**Job description**:
**Role Description**
Acting as part of the Commercial Senior Management Team (SMT), you will work to deliver their vision of a high performing commercial directorate that enhances operational and policy delivery while securing value for money.
The role will provide strategic and operational support to the Commercial Director and will have overall responsibility for the successful delivery of key areas of business and people operations for the team, ensuring that the Directorate has the right resources and tools in place to provide an excellent cross-departmental service.
You will be instrumental in enhancing overall performance through improving systems and processes, embedding best practice and working to develop the culture of the Directorate, and will also be responsible for the line management of the Executive Assistant to the Commercial Director.
**Key Responsibilities**
- ** Workforce management** - leading on recruiting the best people to deliver the best commercial outcomes, workforce and succession planning, adherence to HR policies and processes;
- ** Change and project management** - supporting the Director with the transition to new operating model and delivering ad-hoc projects as required by the Director, and ensuring that changes are communicated effectively across the Directorate to maintain the culture of the team
- ** Financial control** - securing and managing the Directorate’s budget, liaising with Finance colleagues to ensure that the Directorate remains on track in terms of spending
- ** Office & facilities** - creating the right environment to enable staff to deliver, including making best use of space and facilities
- ** Risk and business continuity management** - maintaining and developing the Directorate Risk Register, acting as the Directorate Business Continuity Manager
- ** Stakeholder management** - cross-departmental collaboration fostering a more consistent approach to operational delivery, deputising for the Commercial Director where necessary and enabling effective responses to commissions
- ** Staff and people management** - line management of the EA to the Commercial Director, supporting the Commercial Director in building a strong team culture and helping to define and embed core team values
