The friendly Paediatric Ophthalmology department at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated Band 6 orthotpist to join our team of 2 orthoptists, 3 optometrists, and 2 ophthalmologists. The post is fixed term 9 months for maternity cover.

**Working days**: Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays.

The successful applicant will be responsible for paediatric assessments in our Consultant led clinics and Fast Track clinics, which consists of the optometrist and orthoptist. They will also be running orthoptic follow up clinics and will be required to manage patients for their treatment plans.

We are a dedicated team and are committed to deliver efficient and high quality ophthalmic care to our patients. Being a good clinician is obviously important, and we are also interested in your ability to communicate and work with a wide range of people whom you will encounter in our hospital. Our department supports the Orthoptic Universities of Liverpool, Glasgow, Sheffield and the UCL. We also support ophthalmology fellows in their training. We would therefore would like a keen mentor for our visiting students.

The hospital is situated near Earls Court and South Kensington underground stations, with over ground trains running to nearby Imperial Wharf and West Brompton stations.

Job Summary

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out orthoptic assessments and treatment for both adults and children presenting to the ophthalmology service. The post holder will need to use their specialist skills to diagnose and treat all conditions as necessary using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence based practice. They will work as an active member of a multi disciplinary team and also assist the head orthoptist in the administration of the department. Duties also include carrying out automated visual field testing. Other clinical duties will be included as required, according to clinical competences already achieved and training given in the post.

Clinical
1. To observe and maintain professional standards at all times in line with the Codes of Conduct and Standards of Proficiency of the Regulatory Body, the Health Professions Council (HPC) and the British and Irish Orthoptic Society.

2. Assess and diagnose all patients presenting to the Orthoptic Department, as an autonomous practitioner, incorporating specialist skills, in order to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment plans for patients of all age groups, mental and physical ability whilst adhering to any national and local guidelines. This includes patients with complex ocular motility and paediatric ophthalmology conditions.

3. To be competent in the analysis of complex facts in order to reach an accurate diagnosis and to determine the most appropriate treatment modality from a range of treatment options, including patients requiring orthoptic, optical, pharmacological and surgical management and to have the ability to discuss the pros and cons of procedures and their potential outcomes and to develop specialised programmes of care

4. To demonstrate specialised observational skills to assist with diagnosis and management of patients where conventional clinical assessment may be difficult, such as special needs children and patients who have suffered stroke or neurological disease.
