- Job description- This Environmental Crime Officer role in the Enforcement Team, based within the Solent and South Downs Area (SSD) will primarily be focussing on enforcing Flood and Coastal Risk related operations and activities. The team has responsibility for a large area between Hastings, East Sussex to the East, the New Forest to the West to the Borders of Surrey and Wiltshire to the North.
The purpose of the role is to support the delivery of the following priorities in a dynamic and at times challenging environment:

- Working closely with flood permitting and asset performance teams
- Taking the lead on investigations into significant and serious offences surrounding non-permitted flood risk activities and non-compliance of flood risk permitted activities
- Using an evidence, intelligence and information analysis based approach to target the most serious offenders
- Preventing and disrupting criminal activity
- Protecting the environment, housing and businesses from flood and coastal risk
- Pursuing those who offend deliberately or with careless disregard for the environment

You'll liaise with internal teams and other agencies to provide professional advice and guidance on new and existing enforcement policies, procedures and techniques. You'll be delivering a flexible resource across functions in accordance with national priorities and supporting major investigations where directed.
You'll be expected to use continuous improvement methodology, tools and techniques to identify and implement, or influence, improving the way we work. Activities are implemented in accordance with Environment Agency Health, Safety and Wellbeing policies.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You'll be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- The SSD Area Enforcement Team are small but highly proactive, enthusiastic and committed, dedicated to tackling and stopping illegal activities and operations. Working with other teams across the Environment Agency and partner agencies including the Police, HMRC, Local Authorities, DVSA and more, the team act as a point of excellence for enforcement, developing techniques and sanctions to prevent, disrupt and investigate environmental crime, minimising and preventing impact to the environment and bringing offenders to justice.
- Experience/skills required- We are looking for the right person who can work well both within a team and independently with minimum supervision to deliver enforcement activities, you will need excellent communication skills and have a flexible approach to the demands of the team.
You will have experience of:

- Investigating offences and gathering evidence
- Undertaking Police and Criminal Evidence (PACE) interviews
- Using prevention and disruption techniques, including working with partner agencies
- Difficult conversations and conflict de-escalation
- Working closely with a legal team and influencing partners
- Taking direction and understand the need to work to the Environment Agency's business needs and priorities
