We are the Government’s advisor for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious vision which brings new opportunities to protect and enhance and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.

**The Team**

This role is an exciting opportunity to proactively lead and provide national expertise on all aspects of the conservation and enhancement of historic environment in England.

Working closely with other specialists, you will develop and supervise historic environment research and related contracts, interpret evidence and provide expert, practical advice at national and area team levels. Working with external partners you will work to achieve environmental outcomes support delivery of Natural England’s goals and the Defra 25 Year Environmental Plan (25 YEP).

Specific responsibilities will develop and change over time and the post holder will need to maintain a flexible and adaptable attitude and approach. Initial broad work areas are described below:

- Support with the developing NE historic environment evidence and science programme.
- Work with the Principal Specialist to imbed positive historic environment outcomes across the NE programmes as well as help build awareness and understanding of historic environment work within NE.
- Provide specialist support and advice to Historic England, DCMS and Defra in developing historic environment delivery objectives for Environmental Land Management schemes.
- Project manage evidence projects and communicate the results to inform strategy and delivery priorities.
- Provide technical and specialist historic environment advice at an expert level on a broad range of operational priorities, from complex Agri-Environment Scheme casework to external funding bids, policy, scheme and guidance development to statutory consultation responses.
- Play a key role in driving forward the delivery of NE’s Historic Environment strategy, by testing and shaping NE’s response to the changes needed to achieve integrated delivery of our nature and natural beauty 25YEP objectives.
- Engage with colleagues and key partners to explain, promote, and implement NE’s historic environment ambition.
- Work closely with a wide range of specialist colleagues, seeking opportunities for greater integration of historic environment across all of NE’s delivery priorities.
