Surgical First Assistant

The role of the Nurse specialist - Surgical First Assistant is undertaken by a registered practitioner and can be defined as 'providing continuous, competent and skilled assistance under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon while not performing any form of surgical intervention. The Nurse Specialist - Surgical First Assistant must always maintain accountability for their actions in accordance with their relevant 'Professional Codes of Conduct and must always act to identify and minimise any risk to patients and maintain their duty of care to the patient. A specialist clinical practitioner providing care, expert advice and support, operating within a defined specialism across NHS Lanarkshire. The post holder will ensure a person entered an approach to care delivery which is safe and effective to ensure and maintain quality strategy. To contribute to the development and implementation of a programme of clinical audit and research activity.
It will be an essential component of this role to successfully complete the Association of Perioperative Practice (AfPP) surgical first assistant toolkit to ensure a standardised approach to role performance.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
- Registered Nurse with valid NMC Registration
- Educated to/working towards/operating at Degree Level
- Postgraduate expertise within a speciality/area of practice that demonstrates the required breadth of knowledge required to lead safely, effectively and efficiently.
- Comprehensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards within the speciality/area of practice.
- Specialist knowledge and experience of relevant conditions, pathology, policies and procedures associated with the speciality/area of practice ensuring that the level of expertise can be utilised to deliver leadership within the speciality/area of practice.
- Leadership skills to enable the day-to-day management of service delivery.
- Further education/evidence of Continuous Professional Development in the area of speciality including study days/courses/post-graduate qualification
- The post holder will possess excellent team-working/leadership skills and have the ability to motivate others and work using their own initiative
- Excellent listening, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Effective time management skills
- Working knowledge of basic information technology
UK Car Driver licence.
You will be working on all three NHS Lanarkshire sites.
