**Job description**:
The Lead Safety Specialist will provide technical assistance for UK Maritime Services and Maritime Technology Research and Development, and assist in meeting the Government's Survey and Certification, innovative technology and sustainability strategy by:
Leading the contribution to and developing novel regulations and guidance to enable the safe use of innovative technologies in emission reduction and automation.

Undertaking the internal quality control reviews of innovative technology submissions.

Undertaking innovative technology submissions as required and assisting Survey Operations, policy and Technical Services (Operations) stakeholders.

**Responsibilities**

Key accountabilities of the role include:

- Case-by-case assessment of Stakeholder' proposed approach to demonstrating that the risk associated with the deployment of innovative technology, when integrated onto a maritime vessel and operated within defined limits is acceptably safe.
- Assessment and suitability of proposed codes, standards and good practices, for marine vessel innovative technology.
- Assessment of the stakeholder approaches to identifying, analysing and managing the safety and environmental risks associated with the innovative technology, when integrated onto a maritime vessel and operated within defined limits.
- Conduct independent safety and engineering assurance reviews for autonomy and zero-emission projects via:

- MCA prescriptive regulations
- External Prescriptive standards
- Risk-Based certification

The post-holder will operate a normal weekday working pattern consisting of a 7.4 hour working day and over the course of a year the post-holder is contracted to work 1931 net conditioned hours. On occasion, there will be a requirement to work outside of normal conditioned hours.

There may be the requirement to travel on official duty within the UK and on short-term visits overseas or offshore, which may involve overnight stays.

**Person specification**:
To be successful in this role you will need to have experience of the following:

- Assessment of safety case or risk-based design involving engineering analysis and risk assessment, particularly within maritime, offshore, or other transport sectors.
- Safety design of technologies for emission reduction (e.g., batteries, hydrogen, methanol and ammonia) and/or vessel automation and digitalisation (e.g., autonomous vessels).
- Safety assessment of complex systems and programmable elements.
- Application of standards for functional safety and the assurance of programmable elements.
- Hazard identification and assessments (including understanding of the strengths/weaknesses of the different hazard identification and assessment techniques).

Additional skills required:

- Computer literate and familiar in the use Microsoft Office IT Software
- Organised and able to balance multiple projects simultaneously
- Work well within team environment as well as individually
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
