Location: based at the BGS headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham
Grade: UKRI - Band D

**Salary**: £34,905 to £37,173 per annum (depending on qualifications, skills, and experience)
Hours: Full-time - 37 hours a week (some flexible working options may be available, including a small amount of remote working, although this role is mainly based on-site)
Contract type: Permanent

**About the role**

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a capable and enthusiastic environmental management professional to join the BGS Risk & Assurance Team to work with staff and management across BGS to deliver sustainable and net-zero geoscience.

As the Environment & Sustainability Advisor you will participate in the development and implementation of a strategy to achieve our targets in areas including energy, travel, and waste.

Reporting to the Head of Risk & Assurance, you will be responsible for managing the operation of our accredited environmental management system and will also provide advice to projects and senior management on environment and sustainability requirements, assist in implementation and provide assurance on performance and compliance.

This role is part of a small team working across all BGS sites and activities to lead in the areas of quality, environment, safety, and risk management. The key duties / responsibilities for this role include:

- Advising senior management and BGS Environment & Sustainability Working Group on development of E&S strategy in order to meet BGS legal obligations, public commitments and government targets including: UN Sustainable Development Goals, UK Greening Government Commitments and Net-zero and carbon reduction targets.
- Leading the implementation, operation, maintenance and further development of the BGS Environmental Management System (EMS) across all sites, ensuring the EMS remains aligned with the requirements of our ISO 14001 certification.
- Ensuring provision of required regulatory permits and consents; evaluation and management assurance of E&S legal compliance.
- Development and implementation of sustainable, net-zero geoscience delivery initiatives, working with science project teams to reduce environmental impact of geological fieldwork, survey and laboratory practices whilst maintaining high-quality research.
- Engagement with Estates engineering teams on sustainability and net-zero decarbonisation of geoscience infrastructure and facilities.
- Coordination of E&S performance monitoring and reporting including compilation and analysis of performance data including energy management and carbon emissions associated with science activity and infrastructure; maintenance of data reporting systems and preparation and delivery of regular management reports.
- Operation of a structured programme of E&S audits of site operations and science project activity as part of BGS internal audit programme.
- External representation of BGS interests on E&S matters at NERC and UKRI level.
- Coordinating with and supporting other members of the Risk & Assurance team working in other areas.
