This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified Assistant Practitioner (AP) to develop their clinical skills working within the Inpatient Speech & Language Therapy team.

This AP post will have a particular focus on working alongside speech & language therapists, supporting people with communication and swallowing difficulties in the hospital setting. Based at Royal Blackburn Hospital, but will require some flexibility to support peripheral hospital sites.

The successful applicant will commence employment at Band 3 working within the speech & language therapy service and undertake the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care (Assistant Practitioner) Apprenticeship Route, UCLan (see person spec TAP attached).

The Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care (AP) Apprenticeship Route course is a 2 year academic programme of work based learning in partnership with University of Central Lancashire. Applicants will develop their knowledge & skills through attending University one day a week as well as undertaking work based learning. There will be an expectation to undertake additional study (up to 20 hours per week in the applicant's own time).

To work as a member of the Speech and Language Therapy Team assisting in the delivery of specialist speech & language therapy services across ELHT but specifically within the East Lancashire Inpatient SLT team.

An Assistant Practitioner undertakes highly skilled and specialised support work from referrals screened by a member of the speech and language therapy team. This may include gathering information for assessments, implementing treatment programmes, and making recommendations for equipment and communication aids.

The Assistant Practitioner will use technical and creative skills in the provision of therapeutic activities for individual patients and will be responsible for evaluating and amending treatment programmes and interventions with guidance from the therapist.

An Assistant Practitioner will take responsibility for their own work within a broad framework laid out by a qualified therapist.

The post holder will be required to work a pattern in line with the Inpatient service operating hours which will be 08.00 to 16.00 currently over five days a week but may extend in the future. The post holder will need to be flexible and change base in line with service need and demand.

**Note**: all work with swallowing difficulties must be within levels of competency as defined by the RCSLT Dysphagia Training and Competency Framework.

The SLT service has a well-established team of clinical leads including dysphagia, stroke, voice, neurorehabilitation and progressive disease and is actively engaged in local research. The service is well equipped and has clerical support as well as assistants and assistant practitioners. There are regular team meetings, a commitment to continuing professional development and an annual appraisal system.
