Following on from the successful year of placements for students from local Universities, the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit is able to offer placements for interns for the 2023 - 2024 gap year. This will be for you to gain a year in industry.

Placement Dates: Summer 2023 - 1st September 2024

The Yorkshire and Humber Regional Cyber Crime Unit (YHRCCU) is a leading and inspiring UK Law Enforcement Unit dedicated to technical innovation, cyber investigations and business cyber protection. It forms part of the Regional Organised Crime Unit in Yorkshire.

Our role is to investigate, disrupt and prevent serious and organised cyber-crime hitting the UK through innovation and technical disruption tactics. This is a dynamic role that allows the successful applicant to really use their enthusiasm and experience to push boundaries around networking (Cloud), software development, vulnerability exploitation and developing ground breaking solutions for UK and international Law Enforcement.

Activities will include:

- Reverse engineering
- Threat Intelligence investigation.
- Development of new software solutions targeting clear and dark web criminality or supporting police business functions.
- Supporting investigation of Network Intrusion / Hacking
- Researching data breaches
- Targeting significant Money enablers linked to cyber-crime

Role:

- Support and develop the research and development function, horizon scanning for future threats to support the Regional Organised Crime Unit.
- Own and develop projects around emerging technologies and criminal methodologies. (Use of Cryptocurrency, Internet of Things, Crime as a Service, illicit trading of commodities on the dark web).
- Develop and implement new software and hardware solutions, exploiting and targeting criminal use of technology in support of the regional Cyber Crime Unit (YHRCCU) and other Organised Crime Units.
- Build effective working relationships with external agencies, academia and Industry to maximise learning opportunities and advance our operational capabilities.
- Provide advice and support to the Regional Organised Crime Unit with the development and delivery of digital tactics.
- Deliver presentations to Law Enforcement and partners relating to ongoing research and development projects.

Essential requirements:

- Ability and willingness to travel both throughout the Region and Country.
- Currently studying a degree (minimum) in computing or a similar field.
- Enthusiasm and Experience with security testing.
- Knowledge and Experience with software development
- Knowledge, understanding and experience of command line and Linux.

Desirable requirements:

- Experience of partnership working.
- An understanding of different types of malware and the nature and impact of cyber-attacks.
- Knowledge and experience in vulnerability testing, bug bounties and exploitation.

Security Vetting:
In this role you will be vetted to SC (security clearance) standard. Applicants should be aware that it is not always possible to carry out adequate vetting checks on persons who have not been resident within the UK for the last 5 years. Therefore, where this applies, applicants may be refused on the grounds that it was not possible to vet them to the appropriate standard.

There is some flexibility around starting dates and this can be discussed in due course. This is a minimum 12 month placement commencing after the academic year ends in 2023.
