Research however shows that the space in which students and staff teach and learn can makes a significant contribution to whether students are able to study effectively. With a diverse community of students we must deliver diverse space; however the only way we can understand what students need is to engage with students and to learn from others around the globe who have developed great ideas and have undertaken research and evaluation. The University is undertaking research through the Accelerator project which will pilot new ways of teaching and new teaching space however there is so much more that can be learnt from across the globe and from others also working on developing learning and teaching spaces.

The spaces we create are rarely exclusive to one type of activity; research shows the cross-over between study space and workspace; between social space and study space. We want to understand all the spaces we create. The spaces alone do not create the sense of belonging and experience that we aspire to provide and we want to understand how other factors such as the way that they are supported and the role of services influence individuals and groups desire to use the space and to have a great experience. At Leeds we want to understand the opportunities that all types of spaces create to support everyone who comes to our campus, so that we can start to create a campus that will be vibrant, enable everyone to achieve their potential and to be fun and exciting.

Over the next two years we in FD want to start to re-imagine our campus, to pilot new ideas in education and workspace to become leaders in our understanding and development of spaces. This must be based on high quality research and quantitative analysis. It will be informed by engagement with the University communities. There will be close collaboration with teams working on sustainability and net zero as all spaces must contribute to the ambitious targets that the University has set.

Facilities Directorate is seeking two dynamic, focused individuals who can contribute to the development of the University’s campus development strategy and its associated work streams and bring to it a strong student perspective. Based in the Facilities Directorate the interns will work closely with the estates team particularly the design experts; they will also have direct links with Information, Research and Planning Working Group so that they develop an understanding of current research being undertaken and research methodology; ensuring that the research they undertake themselves is appropriate and accurate. They will develop links with external research projects across the globe.

The outputs of the work undertaken by the internship roles will help re-imagine the campus of the future and make a difference to future generations of students.

The interns will gain experience in research in understanding the links between people and the spaces they live, work, and play in; the interconnections between students, academics, and professional services in a University; building skills in influencing, engagement, and collaboration.
