Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine
4 months ago
Bangor ED’s Clinical Fellow posts are the original and best year out of training. These posts offer the opportunity to live on the doorstep of Snowdon and Anglesey, and gain an appreciation of the challenges of rural EM that city training can never prepare you for.
PHEM posts are designed to be the perfect ‘prep school’ for later PHEM sub-speciality training. You’ll undertake shifts with Welsh Ambulance and EMRTS, the Welsh HEMS service (max 50% of your PHEM time). Close relations with our SAR and Mountain Rescue colleagues provide opportunities to gain unique insights into SAR medicine in Snowdonia.
The posts are open to all those with experience equivalent to ACCS (including international applicants) and at least 5 years’ post-graduation training. We offer a flexible annualised rota with the option of working less than full-time. These posts provide 44 days of development time over 12 months, plus 22 days of SPA (pro-rata for those working less than full-time).
The PHEM post primarily consists of shifts with Welsh Ambulance (on ambulances and rapid response vehicles) and - if you want to go flying - with EMRTS on board the Welsh Air Ambulance. We can provide unique insights into the work of our local SAR colleagues (Mountain Rescue/SAR helicopters) via the Bangor Mountain Medicine Project, although sadly we are no longer able to access flying experience on the SAR aircraft.
PHEM posts are for 12 months and must start in August or February. The posts include your choice of funded pre-hospital course (usually PHTLS or ATACC or the national PHEM course) in PHEM time, in addition to the standard 10 days of study leave per year.
Unlike most PHEM opportunities, we do take pre-hospital beginners and our PHEM Fellows are encouraged to sit the DipIMC as soon as they have gained sufficient PHEM experience to become eligible. The posts are designed as ‘prep school for PHEM’, and are designed to equip post-holders with as many of the ‘essential’ and ‘desirable’ attributes required by the PHEM sub-specialty Person Specification as possible, as well as gaining a wide appreciation of the world of the ambulance service. Most importantly, we ask our paramedic colleagues to train our Fellows to become the kind of doctors they welcome at scene.
If you relish a challenge, have a passion to help others or simply fancy a fresh start, then Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) North Wales, has all the right ingredients. The largest health organisation in Wales, providing a full range of primary, community, mental health, acute and elective hospital services for a population of around 700,000, across North Wales. Join our team and get the support you need, in line with our Organisational Values and ‘Proud to Lead’ competence framework.
Enjoy being part of working with engaged leadership at all levels, and be assured we are committed to promoting equality and diversity, and are proud to welcome applicants under the “Disability Confident Employer” scheme.
Full details of this exciting role in Ysbyty Gwynedd's Emergency Department are available within the Job Description and Person Specification.
