Please see the full job description for more detail in supporting information Job summary: In support of the Clinical Service Manager and Senior Sister, lead the endoscopy nursing team, and in doing so: Act as a role model, demonstrating high levels of clinical expertise, leading, managing and delivering individual patient care. This role will require 2 sessions of non-clinical activity. Proactively promote staff development ensuring its relevance to the practice area and individual needs. To take a lead role in specific responsibilities TBC Facilitate a learning environment for staff and students allocated to the area.

Deputise in the absence of the Clinical Service Manager/Senior Sister, managing staff and physical resources effectively. To coordinate and participate in the out of hours on-call rota. To coordinate and participate in weekend working as service demands, to meet Trust and Government targets, this is allocated on a rota system. Job responsibilities: Leading/Managing Care 1.1 Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on an assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, identifying priorities and realistic goals involving patients, relatives and the multi-disciplinary team.

1.2 Utilise leadership skills ensuring that the ward runs smoothly in the absence of the Ward Manager. 1.3 Assist and support the Clinical Service Manager in the overall management of the area. 1.4 Supervise and monitor the work of staff within the ward, ensuring that practice is evidence based and agreed protocols adhered to. 1.5 Co-ordinate care across the department deploying staff and prioritising as necessary.

1.6 Ensure that staff rotas (including emergency out of hours on-call) are planned in advance to provide adequate staffing cover. Identifies when shortfalls occur, or are likely to occur, taking appropriate remedial action. 1.7 Assist the Clinical Service Manager to manage resources within agreed budgets as set by the Senior Operations Manager. 1.8 Assist the Clinical Service Manager in the recruitment and selection of staff following agreed personnel policies.

1.9 Be fully conversant with all policies and procedures, including major accident, fire, health and safety, disciplinary, complaints and grievance and follows these as necessary. 1.10 Assist the Clinical Service Manager to identify and manage performance issues including attendance, professional conduct, capability etc. 1.11 Actively promote professional development amongst staff within the area. 1.12 Assist the Clinical Manager to ensure that all staff have agreed objectives and personal development plans.

Delivery of Care 1.13 Act as a role model in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individual programmes of care for patients. 1.14 Review and evaluate the care given by other team members, ensuring that realistic goals are set in partnership with the patient, and interventions enable the achievement of optimal outcomes. 1.15 Identify the need for changes to practice and the implications (including budgets). There may be a need for some weekend working to achieve government and Trust targets.

Agree these with the Clinical Service Manager and lead agreed practice change. 1.16 Ensure an approach to care which recognises the needs and views of patients and their carers, and which places the patient at the centre of all activities. 1.17 Ensure an approach to care which minimises clinical risk and maximises clinical effectiveness. 1.18 Ensure clinical and other untoward incidents are reported through the Trusts incident reporting mechanism and that staff are supported in this process.

1.19 Assist in the investigation of clinical incidents and errors and to identify and support any required change to nursing practice. 1.20 Ensure the correct decontamination and tracking of all endoscopic equipment used in the department. 1.21 Assist in the investigation of complaints through the Trusts complaints procedure, using these as a learning opportunity and support the Ward Manager to change practice as a result, when appropriate. 1.22 Assist the Clinical Service Manager in the setting of evidence-based clinical practice standards, guidelines and protocols, which are regularly audited.

1.23 Support the development of multidisciplinary clinical audit at ward level. Communication and Team Working 1.24 Assist in the development of communication systems and maintain existing effective systems within the clinical area, with nursing, the multi-disciplinary team, and support services staff. 1.25 Ensure effective communication takes place between patients and/or relatives and staff. 1.26 Participate and communicate effectively with the inter-professional team and other agencies as necessary.
