**Job summary**:
The Identity Policy Unit is a team within the Data & Identity Directorate, of the Home Office, responsible for developing strategic policy across a range of high-profile science, technology, and data opportunities for the Home Office.
The Unit provides cross-government leadership on biometrics, surveillance, artificial intelligence (‘AI’), forensics and civilian identity policy, delivering on the Directorate’s mission to provide expertise to Home Office and operational partners to safely and effectively use data and new technologies.
**Job description**:
Fair and efficient police investigations and outcomes in the criminal justice system (CJS) in England and Wales depend on the delivery of world leading forensic science.
The Forensics Policy Team leads on a number of areas which include:
- Forensic science reform, which includes designing and delivering policy to achieve a system of sustainable, resilient forensic provision to the CJS, a cross-government change programme and developing and implementing an approach to measuring the impact of forensic science in the CJS.
- Digital forensics policy, including ensuring the police have the appropriate powers to take and use digital material for criminal investigations, as well as policy relating to the future operating model for digital forensics.
Occasional travel to London may be required.
This post can be offered on part time basis however will require minimum approximately 29.6 hours per week (0.8 FTE).
Contractual homeworking is available for this post for anyone based in England and Wales.
**Person specification**:
This is a large and complex area of work which involves working with stakeholders within the police and across the Criminal Justice System to progress various strands of work to provide a system of assurance and to measure the impact forensic science has on the CJS.
We are looking for a motivated individual with experience of forensic science in the Criminal Justice System to join the forensics policy team.
Key Duties will include:
- Supporting the team lead to deliver key commitments from the forensics reform programme, including the implementation of an ongoing system of measuring the impact forensic science has on the CJS. This will require developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships across the Home Office, police, regulators, Ministry of Justice and wider CJS.
- Finding opportunities to progress the objectives of Impact of Forensics project within policing and with CJS stakeholders, including alignment with other national programmes and data improvement projects.
- Working with stakeholders and colleagues within the Home Office to support the design and implementation of a system of assurance for forensic science in the CJS.
- Undertaking detailed, evidence based, analysis to inform, advise and support operational delivery partners, senior officials and Ministers.
- Producing high-quality briefing, advice and recommendations and presenting to Senior Stakeholder boards, senior officials and Ministers as necessary.
**Essential Criteria**
- Ability to quickly establish relationships, influence and negotiate effectively with stakeholders and experts across operational partners such as police, regulators and national representative bodies.
- Strong communication skills, with an ability to grasp legal, analytical and technical issues accurately and summarise key points for a senior audience, work at pace and produce high quality written work and presentations for a range of audiences.
- Flexibility and self-motivation, given the high-profile nature of the work and adaptability to meet new demands.
- Data analysis and visualisation experience and skills.
