An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust with expertise in Glaucoma. We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our team of 24 Ophthalmic Consultants at Queen’s Medical Centre working together to make a difference to Ophthalmology services within Nottingham and beyond.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and be on the GMC Specialist Register for surgical Ophthalmology or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

A full range of Ophthalmology patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care.

Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency Ophthalmic service.

Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department.

The person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times.

The unit offers a comprehensive range of routine and specialist ophthalmic services and the post-holder will be expected to play an active role in the development and provision of the Glaucoma service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

A full range of Ophthalmology patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care.

Governance and Audit

Each consultant is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence-Based Practice. Each directorate has a Consultant Clinical Governance lead.

Teaching

The Trust works to ensure the best possible placements and training for both undergraduates and junior doctors and to ensure consultant trainers & teachers are developed and supported. The Trust facilitates this through agreeing appropriate job plans, a clear framework for the delivery of medical education, and the opportunity to enhance clinical and teaching skills through Continuing Professional Development.

Research

The Trust has extremely close links with Nottingham University, and has academic departments in the majority of its clinical specialties. There are University and Trust research facilities. The Trust has a research strategy and management framework which aligns its funding for research with the research and innovations activities it supports. Consultants who wish to undertake research require the approval of the Trust R&I Department and relevant ethical approval, and must adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance.

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register
- CCT expected within 6 months of interview date

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
- FRCS, FRCOphth. or equivalent.

Desirable criteria
- Higher professional degree ChM, DM, PhD or equivalent.

Clinical Skills/Experience

Essential criteria
- Full general ophthalmic surgical training with extensive experience of general ophthalmology.
- Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description.

Desirable criteria
- Specific training in communication skills.
- Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors.
- Able to perform phacoemulsification cataract surgery independently including enhanced cataract procedures (for those who wish to undertake surgery).

Management Skills

Essential criteria
- Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery.
- Able to delegate appropriately
- Able to work in a team.

Desirable criteria
- Higher management degree or qualification or training
- Experience of change management

Teaching, Audit & Research

Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit.
- Able to teach and support junior staff effectively.

Desirable criteria
- Original Research Publications
