Ra in Mobile Robotics and Manipulators for Dynamic

Loughborough, United Kingdom Loughborough University Full time

To support a 3 years EPSRC funded project titled “Dynamic Manufacturing - Rapidly deployable light weight mobile robots for resilient, responsive and robust manufacturing systems”, a Research Associate is required to carry out innovative research on Mobile Robotics and Manipulators for Dynamic Manufacturing. This is a joint project between the Autonomous Systems and Control group in the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering and the Centre for Intelligent Automation in the Wolfson School of Electrical, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

In these uncertain times, the current “just-in-time” supply chains and bespoke manufacturing capability are too rigid to deal with large shifts in demand that we have seen, for example, due to Covid. Therefore, all parts of manufacturing systems need to be able to adapt quickly to these rapid shifts in the supply chain and demands in the change of manufacturing capability. In this project, the aim is to use emerging smart and more collaborative industrial robotic technology combined with a service-based business model to fundamentally improve the resilience and responsiveness of manufacturing systems which are at the heart of modern industry.

The person appointed will conduct research into the area of adaptable mobile robotics to rapidly and dynamically change manufacturing tasks in a move towards more agile manufacturing. We will be looking into how to get teams of mobile robots/manipulators to collaborate, learn and adapt in response to the expected and unexpected changes in operational environment and demands so that they can perform a range of tasks and they can learn quickly how to perform new ones. These robots shall be also able to integrate and collaborate with human operators or co-workers.
