You will know one or two things about communication as you lead group therapeutic group sessions, helping people develop and improve their speech and communication. Building one-to-one rapport with service users, you will encourage engagement and empowerrecovery.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be supported regionally and will have access to a variety of training and online courses to support your career development and growth.

**Post-holder role**

The post holder will be expected to:

- To provide a high standard of Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) assessment and intervention to people within St Mary’s Hospital and All Saints.Also other local settings as required (such as conducting dysphagia assessments in the absence of another LeadSLT).The person will have a particular specialism in working with people with mental health, Acquired Brain Injury,ASD and/ or LD.Experience of working with people who are deaf is also advantageous.
- To contribute to the continued development of a high-quality therapeutic service.
- To manage a complex clinical caseload ensuring high standards of care that is flexible to the needs of the person using evidence based / person centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate intervention.
- To provide specialist Dysphagia assessment and intervention to patients, utilising competencies and experience at a specialist practitioner level.

**Job Purpose**
- A highly skilled practitioner in the assessment and treatment of communication difficulties and eating and drinking difficulties within a caseload of people with complex and enduring mental health disorders, with a comorbidity of Acquired Brain Injury,LD or deafness.
- To work autonomously, managing their own caseload, advocating the value to Speech & Language Therapy to the MDT in the diagnosis and management of complex communication and swallowing disorders in the inpatient mental health population.
- Provide ongoing support and education to ward and catering staff in the recognition and management of dysphagia.
- Provide ongoing support and education to ward staff in understanding communication difficulties and developing skills in how best to support people with communication needs.
**Description of Duties Key Result Areas & Performance**: The post-holder will be responsible for the provision of full and comprehensive, highly specialist SLT services to culturally diverse in-patients with complex and enduring mental health disorders, and other co-morbid conditions or issues such as:

- Learning Disability
- Acquired Brain Injury
- Deafness
- Personality Disorder
- Emotional and mental health problems with associated risk behaviours
- Challenging behaviours etc.
**Responsibilities will include**:

- Provision of highly specialist SLT assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with mental health problems, working collaboratively with the patient and their clinical team towards shared treatment goals
- Provision of highly specialist eating and drinking assessment and advice on risk management. To include educating, training and sharing of skills with MDT as required.
- Provision of SLT advice and consultation to others involved in patient care. As an autonomous practitioner, he/she will be responsible for their own work and interventions and for the interpretation of agreed guidelines and policies.
- Provision of all the above to other supporting local Elysium services as and when required.

**Workforce**

Clinical:

- To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence based practice in individual work and work with other team members.
- To monitor and review the effectiveness of the clinical work undertaken either personally or jointly with other members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to ensure that it reflects the best available evidence for practice.
- To participate in data collection, audit, service evaluation and clinical research designed to improve the understanding and effectiveness of services delivered to patients. This will be agreed with the company according to clinical governance guidelinesand in agreement with the post-holder’s service and professional managers.
- To undertake project management, including clinical audit and service evaluation to help develop service provision.
- To work with the MDT to develop and maintain a philosophy of care for SLT services in line with service and pathway objectives.
- To develop a range of therapeutic interventions and care protocols which relate directly to the service philosophy or specific clinical issues.
- To regularly review the delivery of the service, working with the Regional Lead SLT to look at changes and new initiatives, both national and local, to ensure that the service remains needs led. Including looking at strategies for caseload management.
- To be involved in clinical governance/audit projects.
- Promote multi-disciplinary and inter-agency liaison, collaborative practice and policy development. Advise line managers and other members of the MDT on issues of service delivery including shortfalls, service pressures, cli
