The Department for Education (DfE) is recruiting for an exceptional Senior Media Officer to lead one of our media teams or high profile portfolios.

You will be joining a busy, award-winning communications team that is highly-valued by, and works with, Ministers and senior officials to communicate key public policy and education priorities.

You will be expected to quickly win the trust of and work closely with the Secretary of State and Ministers, policy teams and communications colleagues in the DfE and across the Government Communications Service (GCS) which you will be a member of.

You will be a key part of the management team working alongside the other Senior Media Officers and with your Chief Media Officer (Grade 7).

You may also have line management responsibility, if not, you will have the ability to task manage and support the team on projects. This will include providing bespoke advice and guidance on how to effectively reach external audiences and maximise positive responses from stakeholders.

You will also work closely with the digital team, campaigns, stakeholder management and wider colleagues in internal and strategic communications to deliver consistent, high quality content.

**Job description**:
Work closely with policy teams from conception through to development and implementation across the range of the department’s policies, including delivery across the three key priorities of skills, schools and families;
- Provide advice - and constructive challenge where required - to policy teams, the Permanent Secretary, Ministers, and special advisers on the communication implications of those policies;
- Create and implement communication strategies that keep us on the front foot and build the public’s confidence;
- Demonstrate excellent written communication skills and set standards to ensure appropriate content, messaging, tone and consistency in media communication;
- Have excellent social media understanding and knowledge and be aware of spotting and reacting to emerging trends on the main social media channels.
- Participate in the out-of-hours duty rota providing an on-call service to members of the media;
- Represent the DfE in cross-government meetings, and work with external stakeholders to gain insight, to influence where necessary, to suggest joint initiatives where appropriate and to contribute to the existing or proposed initiatives of others;
- Develop a good understanding of the business priorities for each Ministerial portfolio and identify and flag risks and issues identified; and
- Potential line management with the ability to develop and coach the media officer(s) in your team, ensuring they are well-motivated, highly skilled and high-performing individuals aligned towards delivering engaging, accurate and timely content.

**Essential criteria**:

- You will be a confident, creative and experienced communicator who can quickly get to grips with fast moving and complex issues. You will take an audience focused approach to your work.
- You will have experience of leading junior members of staff and supporting their development, or of heading up a team of colleagues from across your organisation to deliver on a key campaign or handle a major news story.
- You will be expected to maintain and build on incredibly high standards, while thriving under the pressure of a delivering a substantial news agenda in a fast paced environment.
- You will have experience of using insight and evidence to inform your communications approaches and media campaigns and be expected to use evaluation metrics to measure success.
