Our Planning Team has a meaningful role to play in promoting a coordinated approach to sustainable development. We deal with challenges ranging from major infrastructure projects, as well as addressing climate change and enabling us to welcome everyone.

We're looking for an experienced planning professional to join our team as a Planning Adviser providing maternity cover and contributing to our ongoing work in Devon and Cornwall.

This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 12 months.

What it's like to work here:Here at the National Trust, we care for and provide access to more land and buildings in England, Wales and Northern Ireland than any other private landowner. In Devon and Cornwall this includes Grade I listed buildings, National Parks and important areas of the coastline.

As Planning Advisor for the Region, you’ll lead on planning advice in Devon and Cornwall. You'll be part of the regional and national consultancy team, working alongside a range of specialists including archaeologists, ecologists and curators, working in an integrated team to support the delivery of our strategy and operations. This is a great opportunity to work on varied projects in beautiful and historic places. You’ll have the flexibility to work from home, at our offices and properties. Some travel is required for meetings and site visits, often to rural places.

What you'll be doing:You'll play a key role in tackling the planning challenges facing our properties, from influencing major external infrastructure and third-party development projects to the sensitive development of our own places to sustain their future.

Effective planning and sustainable management is at the heart of everything we do. Climate change is a big challenge for us and our supporters, and we need your expertise to help us develop and grow in a sustainable way.

Our special places are also facing huge pressure from external development, including large transport infrastructure projects and associated development pressures. Using your specialist planning knowledge, you'll help us to improve our own infrastructure and visitor experience, and operate our properties in a more sustainable way to manage challenges, mitigate impacts and seize the opportunities.

Who we're looking forWe’d love to hear from you, if you have the following skills and experience:

- A Chartered Town Planner (or with eligibility for full membership of the RTPI)
- Practical knowledge and experience of urban and rural planning, major infrastructure, transport planning, environmental issues, landscape, conservation and sustainable development.
- Up-to-date understanding of what’s happening in the wider world of land use and planning (including relevant legislation).
- A flexible, agile working style with an analytical and methodical approach.
- Experience of analysing, resolving and preparing positions/advice on planning issues.
- Confidence in interpreting data and using your findings to influence colleagues and support them in the decision-making process.
- A client focus and the ability to proactively manage your workload, by effectively prioritising, building a network of key contacts and through having the autonomy to decide where your time is best placed.
- A full UK driving licence
