The team/department

The Interventions team in Enforcement provides legal support to colleagues across the FCA, including Supervision, on the use of formal powers to prevent harm. We work closely with frontline business areas to devise strategy and advise on how best to address risks to consumers and markets.

The Interventions team sits in Retail 4, a department in the Retail and Regulatory Investigations Directorate of Enforcement. The team works closely with other teams across Enforcement, including those that triage serious misconduct for investigation and those teams that take action against firms for failing to meet the FCA’s Threshold Conditions.

What you will be doing (the role)

Lead Associates in the Interventions team provide legal advice to Supervision and Executive Decision Makers on a range of interventions across the full remit of the FCA’s work. Key responsibilities include:

- Progressing a portfolio of demanding interventions often with competing deadlines without close day to day oversight
- Advising on evidential sufficiency, identifying key risks and making judgements and recommendations
- Clear and effective communication, both in writing and in person
- Building and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues in other areas at all levels within the FCA, including Executive Decision Makers, and with external bodies
- Overseeing the work of others including Associates where required and escalating issues as necessary
- Contributing to training, knowledge sharing and being a point of escalation on technical matters

The skills and experience you will have

Minimum
- Qualified lawyer, with a valid practising certificate issued by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for England and Wales (if a solicitor), or the General Council of the Bar for England and Wales (if a barrister) (or a similar internationally recognised qualification)
- Significant post qualification experience in any of the following areas: contentious financial services or other regulatory investigations or proceedings; financial markets; investigations involving serious fraud or other complex financial crime; complex litigation or disputes
- Experience of managing and progressing a challenging and varied caseload involving a range of legal processes
