Lead Forensic Medical Examiner

CARING Provide a professional, responsive and caring service to detained persons in the custody environment to support the Custody Sergeant and Custody Officers in assessing the healthcare needs of detained persons and an effective care pathway throughout their time in custody. Be an expert, professional, point of reference, for all HCP colleagues and offering clear guidance on the more complex medical and forensic testing cases. Offer telephone advice to clinical colleagues, approving medication requests, and responding positively to all telephone requests however trivial, inconvenient or untimely. Ensure that every opportunity is taken to refer on DPs (detained persons) to appropriate services to support their ongoing needs e.g.
Liaison and Diversion services, substance misuse services etc. Work as an autonomous practitioner and as part of multi-disciplinary and multiagency teams to ensure detained persons needs are met. Being a visible and participative clinician in the company, demonstrating exemplar behaviours in line with our values EFFICIENT Deliver a forensic practitioner service following the Codes of Practice of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) 1984 and local Hampshire Constabulary policies and procedures. To work as an autonomous, expert practitioner, reviewing pathways and processes at all times considering patient safety and KPI performance.
Supply, prescribe and administer medicines as indicated to address patient need. Ensure complete and accurate documentation of every detained person, staff or victim contact in accordance with FFLM guidelines. Undertake additional duties as directed by PHLs central clinical team, when there is capacity within the custody healthcare service, to support the wider PHL team. E.g.
undertake remote clinical triage to support the Clinical Assessment Service Support data collection and audit activities as directed by the service and wider PHL group to facilitate continuous improvement opportunities. Be confident in dealing with a range of acute and chronic diseases acting as a point of guidance to colleagues. Taking the lead clinically in dealing with medical emergencies with support from civilian staff within the Police station. Undertake and partake in investigations into clinical and non-clinical incidents (e.g.
drug errors, allegations against staff, complaints from the police etc) as per PHL policies providing a professional and constructive view. Act as an escalation point for all HCP instances where a potential hospital admission is being considered. RESPECT Proactively manage all safeguarding and PREVENT scenarios when supporting a detained persons pathway, working closely with partner agencies and making the appropriate onward referral whenever necessary. Proactively partake and support PHL clinical governance processes, incident reporting and meetings to ensure that as a practitioner safety, standards and continuous improvement are embedded within daily practice for the service.
Act as a mentor for all clinical colleagues and support OOH colleagues that are supporting the service during the Out of Hours period. Adhere to the FFLM and other relevant codes of Professional Conduct and always work within the scope of professional practice. Promote the ongoing high standards of confidentiality across the service. TEAMWORK Support PHL HCP, call handler and OOH colleagues across the Hampshire Custody Healthcare Service and more widely across PHL integrated urgent care to undertake deliver the high quality, caring clinical services, ensuring that you are available to offer telephone or face to face support to fellow colleagues.
Work as part of the wider custody team, building strong, effective working relationships with Hampshire police colleagues, and colleagues from embedded support services within the suites. Be flexible in supporting colleagues and the service through changing rota commitments where feasible and undertaking additional shifts where possible to cover sickness and annual leave. Support the training of new team members and upskilling of PHL colleagues that support the service. Lead and support investigations into ACCOUNTABILITY Be accountable for the advice given to HCP & custody colleagues as to the appropriate course of action in supporting the health needs of DPs (detained persons).
Be confident in raising incidents for learning and reflective practice as and when appropriate. Be accountable for ongoing clinical professional development by making every effort to attend peer review/clinical supervision meetings and signing up to further education and skill development opportunities particularly in the forensic aspects of the role.
