Clinical Lead Psychologically Informed Environment

Lichfield, United Kingdom Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Full time

This post will exclusively be working within the PIPE. A PIPE is a specifically designed, contained environment where young men, who have completed all or part of their offending behaviour treatment, can volunteer to come and consolidate the new skills they have learnt.

As the clinical lead you will support the operational staff to work relationally with service users. Especially with understanding the emotional and psychological drivers behind an individual’s actions and behaviours. PIPEs are designed to have a particular focus on the environment in which they operate and recognise the importance and quality of relationships and interactions. They aim to maximise ordinary situations and to approach these in a psychologically informed way, paying attention to interpersonal difficulties. The PIPE model has been developed as an environmental approach to enhance the delivery of core work within prisons and probation (community) settings, where additional psychological or ‘psychosocial’ considerations are required.

PIPE clinical leads are supported by the OPD pathway. As clinical lead you will have individual supervision once every two months and group supervision once monthly. These sessions are currently held in Birmingham with PIPE clinical leads from the wider midlands area. The OPD central team also facilitate a once monthly business meeting in London for clinical leads based in custodial environments and community based approved premises.

As PIPE Clinical lead, you will work closely with the multidisciplinary team, which will consist of prison officers, who deliver the service, but also with the clinical team who support the service. We are looking for someone who is motivated to work within a setting that can be both environmentally and psychologically demanding. Applicants will be expected to work with complex presentations and forensic histories as well as emerging personality traits.

To help in creating and maintaining a healthy psychosocial environment; ensuring that the unit adheres to the theoretical principles of the PIPE model. This includes the design, delivery and oversight of group work and the management of group dynamics. To manage and develop a positive and enabling milieu, ensuring that the delivery of psychosocial aspects of the PIPE service is compliant with policy and delivery arrangements. This will include ensuring the PIPE service works towards meeting and maintaining the standards set out for the Enabling Environment award.

To manage a wide range of complex dynamics within the environment and host organisation. To form part of a leadership team, working effectively alongside Operational, Clinical & Strategic Leads for the service. To enable staff development via training, individual and group supervision. To implement and maintain the NHS and HMPPS Psychologically Informed Planned Environment (PIPE) model as part of the pathway within the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) Strategy.

NHFT is an integrated primary care and mental health Trust, providing physical, mental health and specialty services in both hospital settings and out in the community. Because we put the person at the centre of all we do, we focus on delivering care that is as easy to access as possible. This means many of our services can be provided at home, work or in schools. We also provide health services to various prisons and detention centres in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

For further information on the advertised role, please refer to the job description located under the Supporting Documents heading. The full person specification can be accessed under the ‘About You’ Section of the document.
