**Project Description**
Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) is a set of standards measuring a business's impact on society, the environment, and how transparent and accountable it is. While those standards are widely recognised, e.g. in achieving the net-zero transition, there isn’t currently widespread agreement in their definition and rating agencies provide with inconsistent measurements. In parallel, remote sensing is a mature technology that allows the systematic collection of information about the Earth's physical, chemical, and biological systems. Many products, available on global scale, describe environmental parameters which can be encapsulated towards the measurement of the environmental impact of a business.
The use of remote sensing could help attenuating the disagreement around ESG standards towards more standardised approaches. Within this context, the Catapult is building a framework to score a business/asset depending on their environmental impacts. We called this 'e-score'. The e-score is computed with open access geospatial/remote sensing products and is composed of sub-scores on biodiversity, hydrology, land use, soil and pollution. The successful applicant will work with this framework towards the derivation of the environmental impact of a number of assets. The internship will provide many insights at the intersection of remote sensing and sustainable finance.
